Re: Moving to Sydney

Parramatta is OK, always been a major centre in Sydney, founded in 1788 I see. Less than half an hour from Central on the Blue Mts train _always seem to be new office and appartment blocks going up...

Re: Moving to Sydney

Check out www.domain.com.au & look for furnished accommodation. I was just thinking tonight as I walked around the city between Central and Town Hall, how I stayed in a furnished flat at the bottom...

Re: Brisbane vs Sydney...

When I first went to Brisbane, after six months living in Sydney, I found it boring, but that was in 1979 so it might be better now.

Re: Good restaurants - Sydney centre

If you don't mind a bit of a walk, get the train to Central, leave at the southern exit onto Chalmers St, and walk up Devonshire St to Crown St - ten minutes. You'll pass a few pubs - Royal...

Re: Sydney - Crossing in amber and Traffic Light Camera Flashed

If it is your first ever offence, there's no harm in writing to them, give them a sob story about not being used to NSW roads, etc. It sometimes works. I got off a speed camera fine in Henry Lawson...

Re: new life in oz

If you have the urge to go to OZ and you can get a visa, take the chance and don't listen to the relatively minute number of failures who, for the most part, never made much of an effort to settle in...

Re: Why Australia will never become a first world country

For a Third World country, Australia is not doing too badly, even seemed to avoid the worst of the GFC. Beginner's luck I guess.

Re: Have we really given it long enough ????

I'm pretty sure that the orginal 'Ten Pound Poms' had to stay two years or repay the cost of the ticket in full?

I seem to recall reading somewhere too, that of the million or so who came out, a...

Re: Why Australia will never become a first world country

You can always find a horror story in any country if you go looking for it. I remember seeing a doco in the UK about two families who had employed two builders to do a renovation. One family employed...

Re: Info to help an Irish lad heading to Sydney!

Maybe join the YHA before you come to OZ. I stayed in their hostel at Railway Square on the corner of Pitt St & Rawson Place for a few nights in between moves and it was very good.

There's another...

Re: The Olde Ping Pong Story :-)

Even as you are fighting those waves of homesickness, Australia is (sometimes) working its magic. Unfortunately, you don't realize it until you get back to the UK.

Stay in OZ until you have your...

Re: Approx 3/4 hour commute to SYD

Maybe around Revesby/Panania which is on the East Hills line so goes through the airport. Not sure if the price range will be suitable, perhaps if you go for an older style fibro home.

Re: Christmas Day in Sydney

Go somewhere like Neilsen Park and have a picnic there. I don't think there's any problem with alcohol. The kiosk may sell it too?

Re: Real Madrid v Barcelona - Sydney

According to the Cheers website, they are showing Real Madrid v Barca @ 0755. Not to put you off The Triple Ace mind - it's where all the Spurs games are shown!

The ringer looks around and is beaten by a blow,
And curses the old snagger with the bare-bellied yoe

Why not be what I like to call an 'un-tourist' and just go where you please, with no planned itinerary. I like to pick a station or a suburb at random and go there, walk around, have a drink, a meal,...

Re: Four days in Sydney - suggestions please?!

Why not be an 'un' tourist and pretend you 'live' in Sydney. Get one of those travel passes that gives unlimited travel on bus/train/ferry and go to a few places at random.

Get a bus down...

Re: 7,000 Brits leaving Oz for the UK ...

It was never as high as 50 per cent, more like 25 - 35 per cent at most, although 50 per cent (at least) of those who do go back to the UK, change their minds again and return to OZ, usually...
