Re: Daily English Newspapers in USA stores?

The Newsroom in the 1700 block of Connecticut Avenue in DC carries a huge selection of international papers. Among the papers they have are the Sunday Observer and the Independent - there's probably...

Re: UK Identity Card

Well, if you've been reading the Guardian recently, you'll know that the BNP is getting increasing support even from the higher ends of British society, and that they've been making notable electoral...

Re: How much time will you be taking off this Christmas?

Thanks to my time in America being an academic exchange, I got quite a luxuriously long holiday: I flew to Heathrow on the 13th and am flying back to DC on 9 January!

Not my usual Christmas,...

Re: UK Identity Card

I think that what happened with the introduction of the poll tax will repeat itself with the ID card fiasco. I think that the British people have a proud and long-standing history of civil...

Re: P85 Tax Form

In addition to that, sometimes carbon-copying your correspondence to your MP might help. MPs' offices have access to an HMRC hotline (where even MPs' staff have to hold for quite a while to get...

Re: 40 quid airport tax - bugger that

Well, we're not talking about the situation U.S. here, are we? In the United Kingdom aviation accounts for about 5.5 per cent of emissions at the moment.

The problem is that you get a distorted...

Re: 40 quid airport tax - bugger that

One person flying from London Heathrow to Glasgow by plane would produce about 0.17 tonnes of carbon dioxide. That is naturally 17 tonnes for 100 passengers.

If one person were to drive to Glasgow...

Re: 40 quid airport tax - bugger that

Well, to be fair, I'm not sure a £20 increase is going to rock anyone's boat so hard that they actually couldn't afford the flights anymore...

Having worked for people involved in the climate...

Re: "Britain's Special Relationship With US Is Just a Myth"

Well, if people ask me where I'm from, I do say England or Britain instead of Europe, admittedly. In some instances I've found myself saying "In Europe we..." but whatever I finish that with, it ends...

Re: "Britain's Special Relationship With US Is Just a Myth"

I'm mildly curious: do you consider yourself to belonging to any continent in that case? I personally don't shy away from being called European, as I feel that title describes me much better than...

Re: Driving to a STOP - America

Washington Circle in downtown DC has proven to me that Americans are completely incapable of manoeuvring a roundabout. About a month ago I was driving within the circle and a driver burst past the...

Re: Winter Studs

Having done a fair deal of winter driving in Finland, I can vouch for that!

Interestingly enough, before Nokia started making mobile phones they only made cables, tyres and wellingtons!

Re: Voting Today

Even though I can't vote in the US, I've been campaigning for Ben Cardin in Maryland for the past few weeks. It's going to be a very, very tight race, and we might not find out the results very soon,...

Re: Drool

Drool

This is one of those slightly embarrassing things that I don't really want to ask my American colleagues, so I thought I'd post about this here in (relative) anonymity.

I took a red-eye flight...
