Help me pick out a personalized license plate!
Here in Virginia, personalized license plates are really cheap, so I've been thinking of surprising Mark with a plate for his car. The VA DMV website has a "Create a Plate" thingie so you can 1) see if your plate message is available or not; and 2) see what it will look like on your selected plate style.
Here's the site:
Virginia DMV : Create a Plate
If I do this, I'd probably get the plate style called Scenic (Mountain to Seashore) since it allows the most characters (7-8, depending on what the message is) and would look nice on his car. You can find that plate style under the "Other" section.
I've been typing in some funny Britishisms to see if any are available, and sadly most of them are. I've tried are SOD IT, U TOSSER and BLIMEY -- all taken. PLONKER is available and so is ENG& 72 (Mark was born in 1972), but I don't know... I was hoping to find something a little cheeky (CHEEKY is taken!) but not too cheesy. Of course, part of the problem is that I'm not British so I don't know as much British slang as Mark does.
Anyone interested in helping a girl out?

I've seen a car parked in our town with the word 'Fulham' on the plate. (Fulham is a suburb in London) so I guess the owner is either from Fulham or supports the local Fulham FC (football club). Perhaps you could choose Mark's town or favourite rugby or football club name? My old school friend Andy who lives in Sunnyvale and a Manchester United FC supporter has MAN UTD on his plate (although he's from Coventry!).
I guess the word 'wanker' wouldn't be a wise choice LOL! How about GOOLIES? (it's another English slang word for Bollocks...)
Or; SOD EM ALL
(A realtor in our town has QE II on her plate - although she's American, her name is Elizabeth.....)

However, something like "FCK U 2" is not only something the DMV would never approve, it's not something Mark and I would ever put on our car to begin with. The thing about some British slang (like tosser, bollocks or sod it) is that they don't sound particularly derogatory or offensive to Americans -- that's why it's so funny to put it on a license plate. But "F--K U 2"?? That's missing the point.

The Virginia DMV rejected it as "inappropriate" or "offensive". I wrote them a letter complaining of their decision, saying that there was nothing inappropriate or offensive about it, and explained the origin of the phrase. A few weeks later I got my "SWEET AS" plates in the mail.

I guess "FFS" is out of the question then?
