Re: Ex-pats and money in Cyprus banks

Yes, well the real "bailout" now agreed is much, much worse for some. Instead of a light-trim for all accounts, the bigger accounts are going to get a buzz-cut. If you have your hard-earned savings...

Re: Well, here we are, and we can't find a job...

If you've been watching the news lately, then you're probably on a 'plane home by now. Given that Cyprus' main industry is about to be looted and destroyed, the rest of the economy cannot be far...

Re: Is 43 too old to emigrate to canada?

From our experience and from others I've talked to, if you're older, getting a job is not the problem, but getting your non-Canadian experience taken in to account might be. By that I mean that it's...

Re: To old or not to old

Moving countries and cultures is a difficult task at any age. If you're not both filled with enthusiasm from the start, maybe it's not the right move. It's an adventure, more Indiana Jones than...

Re: Stocking up for Calgary (April)?

Well I guess I'm too old to judge, a good night for me starts with a glass of sherry and a game of Scrabble, and ends pretty soon afterwards. But those times that I have been out on the tiles in the...

Re: Stocking up for Calgary (April)?

This may be true of Canada in general, but OP is coming to Calgary, a big bustling city with a young population. It isn't quiet at 10pm in Kensington or Inglewood, on any night.

Re: 18 Months in Alberta

Yes, and yes. Winters here are not as cold as some think with the Chinook winds warming things up every few days, and unlike back in the old country, it's mostly sunny, not grey.

It is...

Re: Stocking up for Calgary (April)?

History – agreed. Culture? We have some of it in Calgary (http://www.calgaryculture.com/taxonomy/term/1). There are two dozen theatre companies, roughly the same number as in Dublin...

Re: The price of heating your home

Exactly that - Measurement Canada (http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/mc-mc.nsf/eng/lm03963.html) has a whole pamphlet on how to check you're getting what you pay for. Wikipedia...

Re: Stocking up for Calgary (April)?

April is a bit of a lottery weather-wise. On any day it could be warm and sunny, even 20C, or it could chuck 20cm of wet snow at you. Bring hat, gloves and sunglasses.

18 Months in Alberta

Our first year and a half has flown by; bought a house, acquired a second dog, only driven down the wrong side of a 6-lane highway once, got permanent residence, made more friends, got a different...

Re: 2 Years and hate it!!

Yes, not counting your UK driving experience is a real PITA. The CMA used to apparently, along with a bunch of other companies, but they've mostly withdrawn this. However, a friend pointed us to...

Re: 2 Years and hate it!!

Sound advice. Getting a job before arriving seems like the safest and most realistic option. 80% of dental charges are designed to be paid through the insurance you get with your job, or that you pay...

Re: Why are flights expensive at the moment ?

That sounds a bit expensive. I've just booked a flight to the UK from Calgary on Air Transat for $1019. I still think that's a rip off, but it's not the airline's fault – the airport charges and...

Re: Best place in Canada to move to?

Vast country, many climates, languages and landscapes. We chose Calgary for the Rockies, the growing economy, the sunshine and the dry air. But really anywhere has its positives and negatives. And...

Re: Areas in Calgary

All really nice and extremely trendy areas. All walkable into the downtown core, and all have great local shops and restaurants. Pretty pricey though.

Re: selling all furniture before moving?

We brought most of our stuff, but if I did again, I think I'd get rid of a much as I could and start again. It's likely you'll be renting initially, and then maybe buying. So not only do you have to...

Re: Mail Forwarding from UK to BC

Probably not helpful, but we used the services of My Mum ltd. We forwarded our mail in the UK to her, and she takes photos of anything important with her iPad and emails the pics to us.

Re: The price of heating your home

It probably depends on where in Canada you are, but from my experience in Calgary, it is much cheaper than in the UK. Gas here is super cheap, but electricity is not, so weirdly the cost of blowing...
