That's a good start. Where do the parents live?

They've bounced back from heart ops & worse before so I reckon they'll be okay.

Edit: the sister who lives fairly close just phoned, confirmed they are at home sleeping in an electricity less house. Well past their bedtime.

Phew Glad to hear it.

Just picked up on twitter, USGS has measured 67 aftershocks with a 5.0 magnitude or above in Japan since the quake. The earth must be shaking almost non-stop, you poor thing.

Aye, this second. The foundation where we work certifies housing components - I have faith in the (new) structures.

I'm just wondering about the folks in those coastal areas, how much time will they have had to evacuate to higher ground? Television seemed to be flashing out tsunami warnings right after the actual main quake. And it was at a 'convenient' hour.

Looking at the reports that came through at work they may have had about 3/4 of an hour. The initial warning we recieved from the Pacific centre was timed at 0555Z. Not very long, even with a warning system as well organised as Japan. For us to get warnings out here it would take about 35 minutes at the very least.

This is from one of the first we received (bear in mind these timings may have changed, this is a report generated several hours ago.)
