The bank account is handy to have setup but the rates arent always the best. You can book your rate with a forex provider before transferring and dont have to do it through i.e westpac.

The scheme exists the same way as in the Uk so you are protected. Most of the major banks have been around for a long time so you are as safe as you can be or at least safer than stufifng your money...

There is no tax liability on your exchange rate gain where you leave funds in the UK and convert when the rate improves.

In £ terms you haven't made a capital gain so you are not liable for uk...

You cant apply from within Australia. You can enter on a tourist visa but would need to leave and enter i.e nz on a cheap flight and wait for a few days to get your working holiday visa

I think theres normally a fee for opening a bank account but they waive it if you are using them for transfer service which has been cheaper having looked around
