If we mail order goods from the UK can we claim back the VAT from customs? I emailed customs but got a nonsensical reply back.

Any ideas?

If your supplier knows what he's doing he shouldn't be charging you VAT in the first place...

Yeh, it's a small town optician. I asked and he said I could claim it back off customs.

Hi

Generally taxes are applicable for services and or goods sold and used in the country or territory (IE UK and or Europe economic zone).

So you shouldnt be paying VAT and if you are should be able to claim this back - depnds how much this is for the trouble or if you are exiting via a terminal you might use the VAT reclaim centres.

Kind regards

Chris

I have complained this week to St Helens Rugby League Club...after they set a minimum order charge of £100 for export orders.

I pointed out to them that shipping to Oz, they should not be charging me the VAT, but have not reduced their price accordingly. Therefore, they have a £100 minimum order charge, plus (if they have a decent accountant) are making an extra 17.5% by way of the VAT.

They didn't appear to have even thought about the VAT implications for export !

If it helps they are not making it on the vat as it is paid to the tax office or at least should be if they are charging it.

If you have a registered australian business you can claim this overseas vat back.see www.taxbackinternational.com
