Re: hand luggage allowance
My kid (i.e., husband, 35 years old, flies almost every week) takes his PSP as hand luggage wherever he goes. They're not big or heavy - are you worried more about the fact that they're electronic than the weight? No problem, just have to switch them off for take-off and landing.
Definitely take them onboard; IME it keeps them quiet when the movies are rubbish. I know some parents buy portably DVD players when taking their kids long-haul too; mine just watches movies on his PSP.

I take my PSP (I'm a big kid also ) I just make sure the Wi-Fi switch on the side is in the OFF position and that it's fully charged. My other big kid (son) takes his Nintendo DS everywhere with him.
