Re: National anthems, songs

I've always liked this voyageur song called "C'est L'aviron" but it's in French. It's sung in the first minute of this (https://www.nfb.ca/film/voyageurs/) NFB video.

Re: Shocking Deprivation and Homelessness in Canada

I haven't lived in or visited Toronto for years but when I did live there I remember seeing a lot of homelessness around Queen and Spadina - people sleeping on grates in sub zero weather and lots of...

Re: Anyone find the work environment odd in Canada?

That's something I've seen commented on a lot here and on other forums over the years - that work/life balance is poor for many. It's not really strange here but often par for the course.

I...

Re: Public sector strike in Canada?

Looks like it might happen on Wednesday. Passport services (https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/article-psac-strike-federal-workers/) would be partially or fully disrupted and there could be...

Re: Opening up a UK Bank Account from Canada - Which Bank is Best?

They'd probably have to change the name from HSBC though; it would be similar to when Scotia Bank bought ING Canada and renamed it to Tangerine.

Re: Ottawa

It's not so refined when pronounced in the local dialect: 'ull. Living there I thought it was a French place name.

Re: Ottawa

I disagree with his opinion about Ottawa being an unattractive city. The central part is quite scenic with grand buildings and backdrops of the Ottawa River and Gatineau Hills. However, there may be...

Re: Ottawa

It's part of Gatineau now but used to be it's own municipality. It's still a name for the centre of Gatineau.

Re: Ottawa

Last time I was in Ottawa I walked around the Byward Market on a sunny morning. I had to detour around one street by the Salvation Army as someone was uttering loud threats to another person. Other...

Re: Dry January

It's 10 standard drinks for women and 15 standard drinks for men per week with a few dry days mixed in for low-risk alcohol drinking. Mandatory health warning labels as big as the ones on cigarette...

Re: Can I just up and leave to go back home?

On the Canadian side I think you're supposed to inform the CRA what the last day is of your residence in Canada and then file your last tax return before the usual deadline (end of March). On the T1...

Re: How different is Toronto to Ottawa

It's been a while since I lived in either Toronto or Ottawa but from what I remember the winters were much colder in Ottawa but the summers were similarly hot. One thing I liked about Ottawa was the...

Re: Shall we start a cheese war?

I'm partial to Snowdonia Black Bomber aged cheddar but it costs $10 for 200g so it's an occasional treat.

When I moved to the UK I was surprised by the lower price, quality and selection of...

Re: Conflicted

How warm and dry do you like it? For the past few summers at least central BC gets so hot and dry that it goes up in flames. The heat dome this summer had the highest recorded temperatures with some...

Re: two countries separated by a common language

The British equivalent in this case could be "keeping shtum" although I think that's usually used when you want to remain silent to avoid trouble.

Re: About to move to Vancouver - final questions!

I signed up for the beta launch of Revolut in Canada but they cancelled my account last spring because they pulled out of the country due to the complex banking rules. They couldn't get a full...

Re: RichMitch's questions about cost of living

The figures on GDP per capita ratio that I looked at shows Canada (at 88.01%) is below the US but above the UK. It's probably going to get worse as the government has said it's ok with high debt.

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

The property examples from Barcelona are on par with Vancouver prices I'd say. The tiny apartment is probably even more expensive than a similarly priced apartment here in downtown Vancouver....

Re: Could I move to Atlantic Canada without quality of life DOWNGRADE?

Re: UK IT Professional seeking advice from fellow IT professionals expats in Can

My impression is that many sectors are flooded with applicants and it's been that way for years. I haven't found salaries in metro Vancouver that great. My work/life balance wasn't that great when I...

Re: Container Problems - Vancouver to UK

Another issue which may have a long term impact on costs and shipping times is that shipping companies now have to factor in environmental and sustainability regulations into their operations.

Re: UK IT Professional seeking advice from fellow IT professionals expats in Can
