Re: How cold is it?

Walking the dog in the -30's, I will be in my Sorel boots, ski pants over thermals, sweatshirt, Canada Goose parka and 150gram mitts.
And if it gets really cold, I'll swap the ski pants for the...

Re: The truth about winter in Canada.

Springs here....... Not really. April Fools.
We had another 40cm dump of the white stuff yesterday.
This was the biggest storm we've seen yet and roads, schools, childcare, businesses are shut down...

Re: Moving To Wiinnipeg

I'm sure the same could be said of most big cities if you end up in a 'wrong' area. Would you care to elaborate on your bad experiences?

I've not had any issues so far after leaving hockey games...

Re: Land border crossing to the US

Never had any issues myself - but maybe we were lucky.
What has annoyed me in the past is even if it was still within the 90 days, they would remove it at the airport so I would have to get a new...

Re: Land border crossing to the US

Whenever we've flown via a US airport, the US customs people are surprised to see the green slip in our passports as they don't use them any more at airports and informed me they were no longer...

Re: Land border crossing to the US

If you're talking about the green I94W form, it shouldn't be an issue.
We cross at a land border now and again, usually after the 90 day visa period has expired. This means we have to go in, fill...

Re: It's cold... brrrrrrr

My engine block heater is getting more use than usual this year. The engine is one thing but when the seats are frozen solid and the tyres take several minutes to become round again, you know it's...

5 Years today.

And I still don't have anything to complain about.
OK, this winter may be a bit long and harsh - but it's still preferable to damp and miserable.

From 40 miles outside London, to 350km to...

Re: Shipping a dog from UK to Calgary in Winter (plus dog friendly activities in Calg

We arrived in January and shipped our dog over at the same time.
Something to be aware of is the fact he/she will probably not be used to very cold temperatures and may struggle with cold paws.
Our...

Re: Pronunciation difficulties

I completely understand the 'Earl' one as that's my last name.

Conversations usually go as follows....

Canadian: Last name please?
Me: Earl.
Canadian: No, your last name.....
Me: That is my...

Re: Post The Latest Picture You Have Taken

Yep - we were lucky to be in the right place at the right time. It started as a golden glow at the base of the falls and then spread up with all the rainbow colours on show. It helped that it was a...

Re: Carman and the Rural Pembina valley, MB area

I went through Carman last week - didn't stop though.....
It's flat, agricultural and the most exciting part seemed to be when there was a bend in the road as opposed to a right angle junction.
The...

Re: any body enjoy fishing

Considering the location we now live, it would be rude not to fish.....

We've got ourselves an old Naden 16ft boat with a 25hp honda to push it around - now I just need to figure out this fishing...

Re: Top 5 things about Canada

1. Proper seasons - not just a blend of damp for the year.
2. Space to play. Sledding, fishing, ATVing. It's gonna take me a couple of years to get used to my nearest lake - and I've got 10's of...

Re: Renting.....how new arrivals do it.

We're loving it.... We were about 40 miles outside London before the move, so the change was quite dramatic - but we aren't big city people so we've adapted quite quickly to the way of life here.

Re: Renting.....how new arrivals do it.

We're out in the sticks here and found our first rental through the local classifieds and dealt direct with the landlord.
We met, had a chat, agreed on the price and moved in 3 days later - no...

Re: Walking in the road.

It happens a lot here. We put it down to the fact that sidewalks in winter can be a pain to navigate due to deep snow or ice, hence walking in the roads which have been cleared.
It seems a habit...

I've just asked the question in the office - Why do you hunt?

From my experience, winter and the cold weather is a non issue when deciding where to live.
We landed in Winnipeg on a very cold day in January - our first ever experience of that type of cold. Our...
