Why do Canadians walk in the road. I see people walking, jogging, and exercising their pets in the road. We have wide side walks, both sides of the road round here, yet they walk in the road.

You're lucky, we have no pavements here (sorry sidewalks) so we have to walk with cars!?! Although they do either stop for you or give you loads of space when passing (probably more to do with massive pay outs on injury claims if they hit you rather than out of courtesy).

I haven't noticed people doing this in Edmonton, where there is a pavement. Not all streets have pavements, which makes it necessary to walk in the road in the winter.
I've been told you can be arrested for jaywalking, if you walk in the road. My neighbour says that happened to her when she was a teenager. But, she is my age, so it must have been more than 40 years ago.

We have not pavements in our street, means no need for street lighting....every house has to have a light on their drive (by law I believe).

Maybe people are walking, jogging on the road to avoid all the dog crap, suicidal cyclists and pan handlers that are prevelant on some footpaths, walkways or whatever.

It happens a lot here. We put it down to the fact that sidewalks in winter can be a pain to navigate due to deep snow or ice, hence walking in the roads which have been cleared.
It seems a habit that people get into in winter and just carry over to all seasons.

I've been told by some running types that it is because the road surface is kinder on joints than the sidewalk; i.e.; tarmac vs concrete.
Not sure if there is any truth to this though. Have to say it does annoy me when it's summer and there is a perfectly empty path and yet you get runners two abreast on the road, usually towards oncoming traffic, so *I* have to move over to avoid them when they could use the sidewalk instead.
The other thing that gets me is those who run into oncoming traffic when wearing dark clothing with no reflective material / lighting present. I understand you want to see what is coming towards you, but dress so I can see that you are there.

Here I think is justified the reminder that "pavement" in Canada is the road surface,........ Maybe even the natives are confused?

Back in the UK, pikeys used to walk in the road for some reason and then glare to you when you drove past them. Maybe its the same thing here?

I have almost hit idiot pedestrians in the middle of nowhere on dark, rainy winter evenings walking down the side of the road with their back to oncoming traffic without a light or reflective anything on!
MADNESS!
I also wonder where the Hell they have come from and where the Hell they are going, as there is no habitation anywhere around for quite some distance.
Another thing I am not sure about here is why cyclists think it is OK to cycle the wrong way down the road.
