Re: Nervous About Making the Leap

I can't say much for the latter two, but I grew up in Ridgewood, NJ -- if you can afford it, it's a very lovely village. A gorgeous town centre, easy train access to the city, one the best school...

Re: Disillusioned

I feel as you do (although, being from Australia, I usually get asked about my English accent. Sigh.). I've been here 16 and a half years (first in NJ, then here in Virginia for the past 4 years) and...

Re: Dv Lottery/citizenship questions (newbie)

True, but residence of the US (or insert your country of choice) is much more easier to attain if you're already an American (or whatever) citizen. I understand that you need both in order to, for...

Re: Dv Lottery/citizenship questions (newbie)

Haven't the faintest clue, but I will gladly be wrong on that one! From memory, I read that if the ancestry visa was used, one had to reside in the country of the grandparent of whom you were...

Re: Dv Lottery/citizenship questions (newbie)

Well, sort of. The only way I can move to the UK is by way of an ancestry visa (yes, yes, I know!), which requires that I reside only in England for, like, 500 years until I get ILR and then...

Re: Dv Lottery/citizenship questions (newbie)

That's definitely been my experience. I'm going to have to get English citizenship the long way, as my mother was not registered as an Irish citizen at the time of my birth. Had she been registered...

Re: Dv Lottery/citizenship questions (newbie)

Great info -- thanks! Admittedly, the restrictions on NZ and Canadian citizenship by descent make sense to me. Irish citizenship is a bit funny, I think, in allowing potentially endless citizenship...

Re: Dv Lottery/citizenship questions (newbie)

Just to reiterate what others have said, my Dad has Canadian, NZ and US citizenship (latter two through naturalization), and I have Australian, NZ and Canadian citizenship (latter two by descent), so...

Re: N-400 and photos

Rebecca -- I just looked at the timeline in your sig . . . wow! I can only hope mine goes that quickly!

Also, I love your idea of putting my A-number on the bag that holds the photos. Although I...

N-400 and photos

Quick, super-niggly question: how should the photos for citizenship (N-400) be submitted to USCIS? Paper clipped to the N-400 application? Left rolling around in the envelope? Sent in the little...

Re: Moving to New Jersey, school and area questions ??

I grew up in Ridgewood and went through the middle school and high school system. It is a very good school system, although it's very competitive. Property taxes tend to be quite high, hence the...

Re: Proving US ties and Moving while N-400 in process

Fair enough, and I'll go with that. I was just hoping that someone might know of something I could provide that I hadn't thought of. Since the guide notes that it wants proof that 'you (and your...

Re: Proving US ties and Moving while N-400 in process

To be honest, I'm not worried about abandonment issues since I've stayed within the rules for that one. I'm just wracking my brain trying to come up with documentation (per the N-400 Guide) that...

Re: Proving US ties and Moving while N-400 in process

Yes. I used the US credit card several times a month while in Australia. I maintained my US bank account (opened in 1996), although it was largely stagnant while I was in Aus. I resumed using that...

Re: Proving US ties and Moving while N-400 in process

I did not. At the time, the guidance seemed to be to return home (to the US) every 6 months and don't stay out more than a year. (I'm now aware of the reentry permit which would've allowed me up to 2...

Proving US ties and Moving while N-400 in process

I'm beginning to think I will forever be 'almost' about to apply for citizenship. There's always a question, confusion, additional paperwork or some other silly reason for not completing the bloody...

Declaring affiliations before becoming USC?

I'm (finally!) starting the process to become a US citizen, and I'm a little confused by the 'affiliations' section (Part 10, items B8a and B8b) on the N-400:

'Have you ever been a member of or...

Re: Why do you use expat forums?

The (very) few times I've posted, it's mostly been for info about US citizenship. There are a couple of immigration layers here who are AMAZINGLY helpful, and mostly everyone else here has already...

Re: Ok, this post maybe a bit different...

I don't know if I regret it exactly, but if I could go back and do it again, knowing what I know now, I probably wouldn't. I gained a lot in experience and knowledge of the world beyond Sydney's...

Re: Redcliffe Area anyone?

Second the suggestion for Sandgate: REALLY close to the beach (the 'sand' in Sandgate isn't just coincidence!), convenient train to the CBD, and it has a lovely little town centre. It has a good...

Re: Possible residency abandonment (green card)?

I hadn't realised the four years plus one day rule, so was figuring the earliest would then be December 2011 (Dec 2006 plus five years). The reference to April 2012 was just for effect.

Apologies...

Re: Possible residency abandonment (green card)?

While I don't wish to berate the USCIS too much, especially since I'm the one begging for US citizenship, my experience has been that they only care about intent when it comes to keeping you out of...

Re: Possible residency abandonment (green card)?

Admittedly, I'm not too worried about immigration bursting into my bedroom at 3am and forcibly removing me from the country (although I don't think I'd enjoy that very much), my greatest concern is...

Possible residency abandonment (green card)?

First off, I do want to thank all of you on this board for providing so much help to others. I've enjoyed reading all of your posts, both the helpful ones and the snarky ones.
I'm not British, but...
