Gday mate, you not here yet!
First few weeks were a bit tuff, trying to find somewhere to live, then i went and got a job second week here, wasnt quite planning to work that quick.
family out here have been great, helping us settle etc.
Have met up with an old school mate last saturday.
Xmas was a bit weird, but the hangovers are still the same just take a bit longer to get rid of in the heat.
If you need any advise on anything before you depart just drop us a line, it sure is a bit diffrent when you get here, if anybody says oz is a cheap place to live its all bull!!!!

Hi Teryna,

Took a bit of time getting the internet as we were staying with relatives for first four weeks, had trouble getting rental so have only been in rental for approx. four weeks. We researched broadband and discovered that Gotalk were substantially cheaper than Telstra with faster connection but took a little while longer to set up but the saving was worth the wait. Rentals are hard to come by here - we went for a viewing on the first one and so did numerous other families - came across the one we are in by chance before it was advertised so didnt have any competition with this one.

Some things are cheaper here and some more expensive - car insurance is cheaper at first impression but then you realise you have to pay two - car insurance and car rego which is the compulsory car insurance so all in all it probably is about the same or slightly more - second hand cars are expensive - we ended up buying new - only slightly more than the same model we were looking at second hand but it came with three year warranty and RACQ which is essential with the amount of driving - petrol is cheaper but you use at least twice as much. Fresh meat and veg is cheaper and in larger proportions but other essentials are quite a bit more than you would pay in Tescos. Bringing your pets with you is expensive - we were prepared for the flights, blood tests, quarantine, flights from Sydney to Brisbane but not prepared for the vet fees that followed. We were not prepared for the dangers that exist for dogs and cats here i.e. heart worm and paralysis ticks. We had to have the dog vaccinated for a year, you can get tablets but didn't want the worry of remembering to give them to him in case we forgot, then the ticks you have to give frontline every two weeks. The Cane toads you can't vacinate against, just have to hope your pet keeps away from them. Very difficult to find a rental where you can keep pets inside so they are faced with these risks from the outset.

House prices and rentals are rocketing - when you consider what earnings are here to the cost of renting and buying a property it is probably at the top end of the UK market.

Schooling is an expense. Even the state schools you are given a list of books and equipment required for the year - for example the calculator alone that our son will need for mathematics next year is approx. $240.

At the end of the day we still feel at this moment in time we have done the rights thing - we were hoping to be a lot better off than we are going to be but we didn't come here just for the money - the lifestyle is better, we do eat better and fresher food etc. There is always somewhere to go and something to do, days out are cheaper than the UK.

(I don't think Steve will be retiring as early as he thought!!!)

For any electricians coming to Queensland be prepared that standards aren't quite what we would expect in the UK!!!!!

Have just spoken to the family on skype this evening - first time since getting here - brilliant, definitely worth getting set up - just showed them all round the house we are renting!!

Hi Teryna,

Living in Redland Bay - rentals a bit more expensive down here but the area is lovely. We had to pay three months rent up front as well as the bond. When do you actually arrive - good luck with the move - are you bringing furniture etc with you - just a tip if so - spray anything that has been outside with Vircon S - recommended by the shippers - all our stuff got through customs and quarantine without anything being pulled - we brought lawnmower, garden furniture, tools etc. as well as furniture.
