Yes it is both quite common and quite easy to do.

The easiest way is to contact a Mortgage Broker at let them do all the running around for you.

It is illegal for an Australian based lender or bank to lend more than 80% of a property's value to a temporary resident.

If you have substantial assets in the UK or a good UK income...

According to my Aussie passport, I've left the country a few times and come back just as many times. No stamps at all for where I've been. When I get to the UK I just wave the red passport...

If you've got a decent deposit then you can generally find your way to a normal fully documented mortgage. Banks and other lenders generally show some lenience towards recently arrived...

Even if you are Aussie citizens, banks will not lend you more than 80% while you are resident outside of Australia. This is because the Mortgage Insurers that operate in Aust will not accept...

But Qld only pay FHOG if you've never owned a house anywhere else before. If you've owned in the UK, you will not get FHOG in Qld.

As has been pointed out, you are on a permanent visa so you can buy what you want.

Even if you were on a temporary visa, you can buy a house that's already been lived in. You would need FIRB...

I think that in WA the house becomes yours at midday on the day after settlement. I imagine it's similar in other states. Where's a real estate agent when you need one to clarify things....
