Default question

Ive heard a nasty rumour that after purchasing a car in Australia you get a lovely tax bill drop through your leterbox several days later Is this true? do they have stamp duty type tax bill on cars, new or old?

Thanks in advance...

I bought a cheap car when I was backpacking out there and didn't get a tax bill - this was in 2001 though, so it may have changed since then!

The Aussie lot will confirm it but I'm fairly sure you do pay stamp duty on cars.

How are you?

2% on used cars. (In QLD anyway)
Comes in the post if you buy privately.
Pay when you buy the car at a dealer.

Use as a bargaining chip either way when negotiating the price.

Yes, here in WA you pay stamp duty on cars, houses, motorbikes, all new or used, and even on mortgages!

And you thought stealth tax was a UK thing!

Not only that but new cars over $57k are classed as "luxury goods" so they are subject to a 25% tax. Yes, you read it right!! This is, I believe, added on at price of purchase.

Thanks for that info, I have stored it away for future reference.

Mind you if I had a spare 57k I wouldn't be spending it on a bloody car I can tell you
