Re: Cumbria not Canada...

I live in Cumbria. It is a very beautiful part of the country, and I don't want you to think I'm trying to discourage you, but

- it's a very low population area, and not many people mean not many...

Re: Movin to USA from UK question

Being a student needn't necessarily be expensive. If your partner has a degree, she could attend university in the US as a grad student. I did this, and although I had to show that on paper I could...

Re: Flights to the UK

You could try travelocity, orbitz, sidestep, travelzoo, expedia, priceline, hotwire, cheapflights, all .com, or search by airlines - if you can get to NYC, Air India is often very cheap; crap, but...

Re: Meaningless expresions

Then there's the midwest habit of saying 'you bet' in response to 'thank you'. You bet how much? On what? Oh wait, you can't actually bet at all, can you?

Do I say anything? Certainly not, I'm...

Re: pardon the interruption..

UKYankee - can't remember if it's .com or .org might also be worth checking out. Its run by and for Americans living in the UK; they can't all have got there via marriage.

Re: Tax, 401k, IRA moving from US to UK

You might want to ask this on a board for American expats; UKYankee has a board especially for tax queries, so that might be worth trying.

Re: working in the uk - sick days

Depends on your employer.

I've always worked in the public sector, and I got six months on full pay, and six months on half pay. Per year.

Re: Help!! What have you gained and lost from moving to the USA

Well, my biggest gain has been weight.

As for studying as a route in, and the cost. I am at a public university, and for some reason they only charge me the same fees as out of state Americans....

Re: Pet Peeves peculiar to living in the USofA

Don't get me started. I bought my house in the UK at the end of 1989, watched the bloody thing halve in value over the next few years, and have finally crawled my way out of negative equity.

I've...

Me: No, I'm English
