Re: Hi everyone - Moving to Doha

Critical to surviving Doha is making plenty of escape plans. Long weekends in the UAE or Oman, venture a bit further afield to Sri Lanka or the Maldives, weekend breaks in European cities or around...

Re: Moving to Dubai - with a cat?!

My info is a few years out of date and rules do change.

Best to have your accommodations sorted out before bringing over a cat. Very few hotel apartments, where most people stay upon arrival,...

Re: Anybody Currently Teaching in a British School, UAE.

You're not going to replicate that in the UAE. I'd think only heads of school have their own villa. Teachers seem to be offered flats. You have three children, which is also a bit of a challenge as...

Re: Shipping household items to Dubai

Ask your employer's HR. They would know. I vaguely remember in years past pocketing the shipping allowance and arriving in Dubai with my worldly possessions in two suitcases (looks wistfully around a...

Re: Potential Move To Qatar - Is it enough?

You get what you pay for. The better ones will be more than 60.

Qatar bribed a number of western universities to open satellite campuses, which are mainly concentrated in a new and very dusty...

Re: Potential move to Dubai from Oz

Expats are all over. No one "best" area. Broadly speaking, western expats gravitate toward the south end of the city. A lot of Australians liked to live near the beaches in Jumeirah / Umm Suqiem, but...

Re: Potential Move To Qatar - Is it enough?

Is schooling fully funded or is it capped?

With two children in secondary and presuming the eldest is doing A-levels, I'd be thinking very carefully about the quality of schooling. What is the...

Re: Driving Bahrain to Qatar and back

Ah, there was me thinking the end of the embargo meant the resuming of direct flights. Why there are now direct flights between DXB and DOH but not Bahrain and DOH I do not know.

Driving through...

Re: Driving Bahrain to Qatar and back

Uh.... why not fly? 40 minute flight. Your passport is all that is needed assuming you have UK passports.

Driving via Saudi is a huge hassle and pointless.

Re: Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan

Looks like people get Monday off. A decade ago it'd have been a solid week, but these days I suppose one should be lucky for a day. Convenient to pass away just in time for the weekend.

Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan

Just heard of his passing.

I remember the expat whispers that he was dead/on verge of dying/massive stroke, around 2014ish? Guess he outlived it by eight years!

Condolences to the family and...

Re: Salary and costs in Dubai

It's on the outskirts of Dubai, although what defines outskirt keeps changing. Knew a few who lived there to save money and money they did save. Apartment quality can vary and won't be different from...

Re: Salary and costs in Dubai

450k income

150k for a 3-bedroom apartment inclusive of utilities. Look for "chiller-free" apartments as the a/c is included in the rent. Very important differential! Greens is a good...

Re: Job Security in Qatar

Few people eke it out in Doha for more than a few years, unless it's silly money. Doha is a crap place to live. The expat churn is real. Among westerners, probably no more than 20% make it past three...

Re: Job Security in Qatar

There is no job security in the Middle East. If you no longer fulfill requirements, you will be made redundant. And, yes, it's a boom-bust economy. I watched large firms lay off 3/4 of their...

Re: Job Offer - Kuwait

The real reason for considering this job is to use it as a jumping stone to Dubai?

Don't underestimate the tax implications Americans still need to pay. And don't you get to deduct quite a bit for...

Slightly odd expat men

Came across this observation:

Foreigners are strange. And we are strange to them. It’s partly why, as any teenager from Britain learns, it’s easier to get served a drink abroad; your face might...

Re: Leaving Town - Qatar

I'd cancel credit cards soon just to get it out of the way. No harm living off your UK credit cards for a bit.

Sell the car soon. Get it out of the way. Can take uber / taxis till you leave.

Re: Dubai - heading back to the sand pit

The AED is tied to the USD. One would think rampant inflation in the US must be having an impact on the AED.

Re: Job offer in Qatar - Please advice

Does wife work?

It's not a bad package, indeed, it's decent for your years of experience. It's not a major uplift from your current post-tax offer as you'll be forgoing any of the usual US 401k...

Ronda is pretty.

If you have the inclination, drive to Granada. See the Alhambra with the snow-capped mountains in the background. Best tapas in Spain. We were there for Christmas 2018 and had a...

Well said, Millhouse. I had a great time in Dubai and can be wistful for it but in retrospect it's usually more wistful for being a certain age in a certain place making a certain income. No real...
