Working with a guy from Ballarat he tells me it is quite a bit colder in winter than Mel and Geelong as it is up hill all the way 1800ft above sea level.Can get very light snow/frost.

No its just a passenger only ferry.
but its a good drive from Mel to Sorrento the other way,across on the car ferry to Queennscliff and back to Mel that way depending on what time you have.
