Re: Speaking Kiwi

Come off it....

It is like Australian.

I still get them confused after 3 years here (on and off).

The vowel thing is a red herring (rud hirring) because most of the time it's more subtle...

Re: Cheap Car Hire

We used "rent a dent" for a week or so car hire. they run a nationwide franchise operation with lots of smaller garages taking part.

$50 a day, so not bad.

Do check the condition of the tyres...

A corner shop called a Dairy... and some of them sell milk too.

Newspapers without any news.

A postman that only goes to the end of the drive.

Re: The Overlander

I'd love to see the volcanoes like that. It's always cloudy when I go North from Welly.

I have to admit though, I don't fancy the long journey on the train.

Re: A foot closer to the neighbours!

The Earthquake situation scares me silly when I let it.

Another big one, like the 1850s Wairarapa shake, could by some estimates destroy 30% of the buildings in the central business district of...

Re: Homesick...just bit me

In the words of one of my favourite film characters, "Go with it, it will pass."

(Guess the movie)

I don't know how you deal with this, but it's good to know, I think, that we all get it.

Re: don't know where to start

Regarding School catchment, I agree with others that it depends on the school.

Here in Wellington the school my 5 year old attends has said he can stay if and when we move out of the cathment area...

Re: Thinking of moving to NZ

Prospects are not good in Cornwall unless you're a property developer from 15 years ago.

But depending on your skill set, NZ might not be that great at the moment either.

But what is good is...

Now that is a quote.

I'd love to meet this Lady Knox on vivian street.

Re: Hello all greetings from Devon UK

Hiya,

I know a Dave and Gilly in Devon. Not a boat builder though, but I wonder if you're in Dartmouth?

I didn't get on with Whangerei when I visited, but that might have just been the bad...

Re: Considering Moving to NZ?

And don't forget the famous Rotorua odour.

I'm told that if you stay in the area for too long you take on the pallor of a smoked mackeral.

Re: Knock knock

Well, best of luck. I hope it all goes according to plan, I don't want to make light of it, but the redundancy could turn out to be a very good thing.

Re: Waiheke Island, Auckland

Yes, it's a bit remote for me.

We spent a couple of days there on our honeymoon a few years back. It's very quiet, lovely but not anywhere I'd want to live.

We got a two-seater flight back to...

Re: Renting out UK house

Er.. not really... if you are paying an agent to look after the house and you are abroad they are paid to look after general maintenance.

It's also the tenants responsibility to point these things...

Re: Renting out UK house

We're renting out our house in Devon, and have done this many times before on trips to NZ.

Getting an agent is important and easy. Finding a good one is difficult as you only know if they are good...

Re: Home Styles

I love the old-style villas, especially in Wellington. Some of them go back to Edwardian or earlier and they have high ceilings and some real good looks.

But I'm beginning to wonder if I want to...

So why not Wellington?

I'm offended.

You won't get a better, more compact and friendly city, and that's not just cos I'm here.

Re: Medical Docs

Officially, flip flopping between the private and public systems does not go on, the systems are seen as seperate.

GPs are in the public system even though you pay a small fee, about $40

Re: landline telephones

Blimey, that's cheap.

Our broadband and phone line is $80 per month without any included calls. I nearly fell off my chair, but I haven't looked too hard for a different package yet.

Yes, I find it hard too.

I sometimes think I get the grumps just as an antidote to my wife's fearful state of excitement with all things New Zealand.

But actually, I miss my mum and my brother,...

Re: Medical Docs

One side...
