Thanks for sharing!
We had a 6.3 earthquake here in Cairo a few years ago and because of badly built buildings and overpopulated areas quite a few people died. It was a scary experience and it felt quite violent, and I will never forget the horrible sound, sort of like an enormous truck passing or thunder. It's not a nice feeling when the earth moves, makes you feel very tiny and helpless really.
I'm glad there was no major damage... 7.8 is very serious!

BBC Radio 4 did a very funny interview, with an Australian Author and an NZ Radio presenter from Wellington - it was very funny and they mentioned contacting airlines to see if fares would be any cheaper!

The Earthquake situation scares me silly when I let it.
Another big one, like the 1850s Wairarapa shake, could by some estimates destroy 30% of the buildings in the central business district of Wellington. Imagine the death toll.
And then the civil defence plans are for a 6.5 (or 6 I can't quite remember) quake, but the 1855 event was closer to 8.5.
You have to try and forget about it otherwise you would simply not live here without being extremely picky about where you lived and worked.
