Yes there heatwaves and it a great deal hotter than the UK but for their respective latitudes the likes of Sydney and Melbourne have fairly pathetic summers.

Sydney actually isn't that 'hot' in summer. Minus the odd heatwave it's comparative to a Parisian summer. Overall it's very temperate.

not much help but if you're ever in sydney head for thai town. A lot of the restaurants have genuine Thai food, you can tell by how many Thai people are eating there.

Australia does have European climates, just not in the capital cities. Although Canberra has colder year round minimums than London and Paris though with warmer summers.
