Just another drunken Aussie yobbo.

I feel strangely proud of Jess Fox the young Australian girl who won Silver in the K1 Canoe Slalom. I used to hang out with her dad when we were kids. Not spoken to him since we were about 12 but that doesn't stop me feeling very chuffed.

Well - I log on to day and I see GB has leapfrogged many many nations and have a 8 Gold haul in a few days after their own media were a bit down.
Well done GB. The Australian papers are full of the fact it's all been Silver ....
(worst games since the 70s?)

It's been noticeable that has the medal table positions have diverged, the rhetoric of 'our traditional foes' has changed to hardly mentioning the UK at all. Take a look at this article on how badly Australia have been doing :
http://www.theage.com.au/olympics/sw...804-23lu3.html
the comparison's made are with France and South Africa, the UK doesn't get mentioned. Compare that to this article, written before the UK started winning golds :

They really need to learn how to lose better.

UK is in 4th in the medals table, well ahead of where they usually at this stage of the proceedings. Australia is 19th, and as I understand, they were considered most likely to score medals early.

You're comparing different papers though - is one a tabloid? I've been consistently looking at the Australian and they're pretty negative.
There's no point in comparing to the UK - they've broken their drought.
Yesterday's Australian had coverage on Higgins and Redgrave.
Haven't yet seen what their position is yet on the sudden increase in Brit medals.

OK silver isn't gold, but it is still a pretty good medal to have. GB have been more disappointing in the swimming than the Aussies as a rule.
The worst place, apart from disqualified or last, is 4th. DD gets that in some races, and it is hard, particularly if you have missed a medal by a miniscule fraction of a second.
Mind you, in the higher quality meets, eg state level, DD is in the slowest heats anyway, and is chuffed if she doesn't come last!!
I guess it comes down to what your original expectations were, and the Aussies were over hyped.

Swimming is just one area of the Olympics, and not the only area where Australians have come up quite a bit worse than normally expected. Another example of this is in the velodrome with Anna Meares who didn't even place in the final.

Triathlon about to start. C'mon Helen
BBC's intro to the sport was interesting, apparently they use try bikes in ITU
That'll be news to everyone seeing how tri bikes are banned in ITU
