Hello
Well hello Poms!!!
Just thought I should do a little hello post and introduce myself (as already done in the welcome inn)
I've moved over from the UK mid March and commenced my new position as a systems analyst for a large worldwide financial organisation. The project is for 5 years and I'm working in between offices in Sydney and Christchurch
If there are any IT geeks, people from Sheffield, or SUFC supporters (and perhaps SWFC fans if in a good mood) in Sydney, feel free to say hi
I'm sure there's many posts but is there anyone else in the position I'm in where they spend a few days in Australia and then hop across the tasman to New Zealand? Whilst it is exciting and enjoyable so far, 5 years of this is something to look forward to
I am hoping to move my family over in June but haven't made my mind up about whether to base in Sydney or base in Christchurch. I've got a 3 and a 1 year old, with a wife that'll be a stay at home mum. Unless our situation changes, we can potentially afford to live off one salary.
I look forward to discussing Australia in more detail when have more experience of the place. So far, it's been fabulous - I love the cinemas in particular, having a meal with some glasses of champagne whilst watching a movie, just brilliant.
Finally, I've been told to support the South Sydney Swans in the AFL? Is that the recommended Sydney team to support? It's a sport I want to get into as many go on about it, but have no idea who's who.
All the best

Re: Hello
Welcome to Sydney! I have been here 5 years, but am not into AFL, still preferring rugby Union, though AFL is a great game to watch- the players are super fit- I haven't figured out all the rules yet!!
Which area are you mostly based in? I'm biased, but for mum and bub I'd say Sydney is better- more things to do and warmer. It is much more expensive than NZ though.

It will all depend if you enjoy the sport of Australian Rules Football? Sorry, I'm a purist, as AFL is only the league name, like EPL, FA Cup, EUFA etc. There is no hard and fast rule on who to support. You might want to follow the Greater Western Sydney, or you could support any team you like from any city you like. If Aussie rules isn't your cup of tea, there are other codes, clubs and the like......
If you go to Christchurch, I hope you like Rugby Union and earthquakes.........

Re: Hello
AFL isn't much chop in Sydney
Why not pick a real football team with real atmosphere

Re: Hello
I used to live near High Wycombe, Bucks, whose local team were Wycombe Wanderers. Whenever I hear "Go the Wanderers" or any reference to the Wanderers, I automatically think of Wycombe!!
