Now there's a chip aficionado talkin'.

Beginning to take the mark of my local friteries based on their curry sauce.

With a few spices and a can of coconut milk it isn't much of a challenge.

I'm cool with that, but the takeout thing is for those times when you just can't do it.

Heck, I can make a better curry sauce than a take-away, but... OH "doesn't really do curry".

It depends what you want from the sauce though.
I make my own curries using curry powder and whatever other meats and other ingredients or I cheat with VH (or similar) sauces, usually Thai. They're all different and all very good. The Red Thai ones go great with a bottle of rosé.

But then if all you're having is curry sauce and chips - not fries, but chip shop chips - then what you want is chip shop curry sauce which is a different beast altogether. I would not dream of making gravy using Bisto, but Bisto's Chip Shop Curry Sauce (as in Siouxie's link) fits the bill perfectly.

I've honestly never seen at least half of the products featured in Siouxie's link, I shall have a poke around.

Back to the perennial - not fries, but chip shop chips - question, at home I make Belgian fritjes (have done for years) which are 'chip shop chips', here. When you mention 'fries' I think of McD and suchlike which would likely decompose dissolve in a decent curry sauce. I don't make 'chip shop style' curry sauce, but if I find one of those products in the link I'll maybe give it a try.

Even in Switzerland? It's no wonder the Swiss threw you out of the country.



This is the one to have in the cupboard. Just hot water and the granules to your desired thickness. But you may be able to find something similar. I seem to recall seeing an ASDA version in packets which would be a lot cheaper for mailing over here than this pot.

Amazon's great for those little treats that you just can't get here and with no suitable alternative.

I can see that on amazon Germany, was about to check shipping prices, but came across these people who would seem to be a better option, have a wider selection and ship worldwide.

But as I'm almost out of Abbots Ale and Bishops Finger, I will see if my not-very-local Britshop can source the Bisto in the next couple of weeks.

In my early days over here I considered them along with a couple of other including abitofhome in Toronto. A lot of juggling was needed to get the best deal. Some had minimum orders some minimum mailing costs and some were just more expensive.

Fortunately, those things where you just had to have those things rather than an acceptable (or not) alternative gradually made it into other stores where you could go and get them without the faffing around and sacrificing one thing to save half the bleedin' cost.

But not the curry granules, fray bentos pies (could just have the steak ones) and there's still no substitute for Colman's (or Schwarz) cook-in sauces.
