Re: Pet Peeves?

Thought of one other one that I see every day:

You're on a two lane road. There are cars parked along the street in the opposite lane. A moving car coming the other direction pulls into your lane to get around the parked cars, forcing you to stop and wait for them to clear the way.

No, no, no. You can't just come over into the opposite lane and cut off oncoming traffic, regardless of the fact that there are parked cars in your lane. You have to wait until cars coming the other way are clear. I know it's not "fair", that you had nothing to do with the cars parked there, it doesn't matter. You have to wait. Gah!

You're both wrong. There is usually enough room for both of you to pass if you are both considerate and remember that you are driving a car/ truck/ minivan not an H1 Hummer!

There are still too many people, usually old f@rts and soccer moms in minivans, who don't understand the physics of roundabouts, that you can accelerate onto a roundabout at the same time as a car to your left enters the roundabout and that you will be gone before the car to the left gets to where you enter the roundabout. They insist on slowing to a stop and waiting for a space big enough for a bus!

I think if you gave it a generation, people would learn how roundabouts are supposed to work and that they are more efficient.

If the road is wide enough, then this is absolutely possible. Usually on a main road through a town, or on a residential back road (if you know what I mean).

Not so on our street, though. It's more comparable in width to a UK road, so if someone parks at the side (usually they do, right at the crest of a hill with a blind approach the arseholes), there is not enough room for two cars to pass together. At that point, I try to adhere to the 'if the obstruction is in my lane, I will wait' principle. Few others do though, and just decide to plough on through anyway.

We are very lucky round our way not only to be getting more roundabouts, but also that most, though not all, drivers that encounter them seem to know what to do. I suppose the fact that they had them up in Wisconsin for a few years before we got them helped in some way.

I still see people waiting way too long, or even the numpties that stop in the circle to let someone in, but that's very rare in general.

.

Do they still attempt to text with one hand and drink their coffee with the other , while trying to navigate the roundabout? That's what's nice about traffic lights, you can steer with your knees.

Can't say I've paid that much attention, to be honest

At least the roundabouts reduce the speed and angle of impact to the point that the damage incurred is much less when someone doing that drives into someone. Much better than being t-boned by one at a light controlled intersection, anyway.

You're on a bike or out running. You come upon a 4-way stop sign. A crossing car arrives at the same intersection far before you get there. There's no other traffic and plenty of room. The car inexplicably WAITS for you to arrive instead of just going through the stop sign. This results in the "you go, no you go" dance, inconveniencing everyone.

If you have right of way, you have right of way. This isn't a politeness thing, it's the rule of the road. Hesitating or trying to allow someone else to go through when you clearly have right of way is annoying and dangerous. Stop trying to be nice.

Funny you should mention this.
Yesterday a cyclist arrives at a quiet 4-way before me, stops, waits for me to arrive (I was plainly slowing in a manner that indicated I intended to stop) then he just sits there. After several attempts to wave him through, both before stopping and after, I left him to it.
I suppose in his defence, we are in Florida and he's probably over cautious for very good reason!!!

I could write a small novel about the various inventive ways that oblivious and/or asshole drivers have tried to kill me in the 25+ years I've spent riding and racing bikes (hint: pickup drivers with "Fear This" stickers driven by 28-43 year old fat white guys with goatees generally don't act reasonably around bikes). Riding in groups is highly recommended.

I could also write another novel about the idiot novice cyclists I see out there that don't know what the hell they're doing and make the rest of us look bad.

Negotiating life in the US without a SSN.

Last Saturday went to PA DMV to get my learner's permit - took all the right paperwork, no problems, passed knowledge test, piece of cake. Told to book skills test online. Need last 4 digits of SSN to do so, 9999 doesn't work, neither does 0000 :frown:

Monday: use automated phone system to book test - don't need SSN :)

Today: arrive at DMV, take test, pass, get asked for last 4 digits of SSN - don't have one.... OK, last 4 digits of I-94 - don't have it with me (but they have it on file - phew). Now I have my temporary license and can expect the proper one in the mail in the next 2 weeks. If I'd known about the I-94 number being used instead of the SSN I could have booked on line and had it with me today.

Why is it seemingly impossible these days for a company/organization/sewing circle/satanist dance troupe to be able to announce or advertise anything without changing font, type size and/or formatting every second word? Bonus peeve points for including pointy hands from some late 19th century store front or some godawful handwriting script for choice buzzwords like 'family', or something that someone who would have a 'live, laugh, love' picture on their wall would like

Honestly though, who the hell are their key demographic? Even mentally incapacitated protozoa are above the kind of wank that is being put out these days.

Did you get out of bed on the wrong side today? .... Happy Monday to you! :)

It's utterly jarring. Just terrible.

The right side. The day I turn into some dripping wet, happy, sappy, knitting-circly kind of damp fish that likes things like that is the day I have got out of the 'wrong side' of bed, as ridiculous an expression as that is.

I recently discovered with Young Sir as he goes through the terrible threes that there is in fact a "right side", a "wrong side" and then a "third side" to the bed.
