There is no sanctuary from the ignorant. I took sanctuary from the deluge that beset my weekend retreat (a little town just down the coast), in a newly-opened bar which is part of a larger establishment with a restaurant and a Cuban-style restaurant/bar. Seating for 12 around a boat-shaped bar, hosted by the amiable Frenchman Giles the Bishop; wine and seafood (or Campari and Prosecco, if you wish). Fell into somewhat sporadic conversation with the couple who came and sat beside me, who turned out to be the proprietors (of the entire establishment). I was courteous, complimented them on the food and the ambience of both bars, enquired about how they, as a French couple, had ended up there, learned that they'd owned and managed a French restaurant in Ireland for 13 years, showed my interest in French cuisine, and so on. After an hour or so they left. Not a word of "nice to see you", "thanks for your custom", "is there anything we could do to improve your visits?" (I often take colleagues there, as they know) -- just up and gone. Maybe an indication of disdain for someone whose French is limited, or just plain arrogance. Either way it's hardly a route to engendering customer loyalty. But ignorant -- in a slightly different way -- nonetheless. Unfortunately there's not a great deal of choice... |

That being said, we need more Bill Nyes and not fewer. That anyone in this day and age can say that climate change isn't happening and it isn't brought on (or at least accelerated) by man boggles my mind.

Re: Pet Peeves?
I'm a fanatical cyclist and runner. The following happens at least once every. single. day.
You're on a bike or out running. You come upon a 4-way stop sign. A crossing car arrives at the same intersection far before you get there. There's no other traffic and plenty of room. The car inexplicably WAITS for you to arrive instead of just going through the stop sign. This results in the "you go, no you go" dance, inconveniencing everyone. If you have right of way, you have right of way. This isn't a politeness thing, it's the rule of the road. Hesitating or trying to allow someone else to go through when you clearly have right of way is annoying and dangerous. Stop trying to be nice. |

I know of several places where traffic stops while someone wants to turn left and there is no centre turn lane so when some dipstick crawls to a halt blocking the side road or business, traffic in both directions has to stop! :frown: Every morning taking little Miss P to school I have to take an acute right turn, and most days I can let someone from the opposite direction, turning left in to the same road, go ahead of me with absolutely zero inconvenience to me (the corner is so tight/slow for me that I couldn't hit them if I wanted to to!), and a flick of the lights is enough to encourage them to take the opportunity, I usually accompany it with a wave/point. |
