I find it amusing how Brits (well, some Brits) struggle to be 'grammatically correct' (or is it 'phonetically correct'?) in this manner. When speaking the word 'Paris' (the capital city of France), do you say 'Paree' the way a French person would, or 'Paris' (like 'Harris') as a Brit would? I believe most would say 'Paris' (like 'Harris') and not 'Paree'. So why would we struggle to say the word 'Gyro' as a Greek person would?

For me at least, "correct" pronunciation is relative to where you are when you are speaking.

If I was in France asking for directions I would say "Par-ee", in Germany I would say "Munchen", and "Firenze" in Italy, but in England or the US I would use the corresponding names commonly used in the English-speaking world.

In the US I say "wadder", "ledduce", "to-may-to", and, yes, "hero" (for gyro), because those are how those words are pronounced in the US ..... in my case with a muted Sheffield accent!

I don't know if it's the same as the English name of a city or country. Obviously you don't tell people you're off to España for your holidays, but one does try to use the correct Spanish pronunciation of 'jalapeño' when ordering nachos. Loan words vs place names, etc. I don't know, mostly I don't want to make an arse of myself in front of the nice young Greek ladies who are taking my order, OK?

Anyway, back to peeves. The bloody clucking hens are back at it at the office (like they ever stop). Fall is upon us so of course, now that it is 60 degrees outside it's 'freezing'. It is at least 70 in the office as well, **** it drives me up the bloody wall. Do they pay the gas bill? Do they bollocks, if you want to continue getting paid on time, the thermostat stays where it is. If you're so sensitive you can't handle temperatures in the 60s, wear a ****ing coat.

Arsing hell.

I've found at least 3 different pronunciations for this word in NYC alone. with some people (like me) saying 'hal' and others saying 'jal' and so on.

You and those with you are saying it correctly, there is no hard 'j' in Spanish. The other variation is in how the 'ñ' is pronounced, isn't it?

Was merely an example, I have no expertise in Spanish words in the main, I just picked that one because it's commonly mispronounced round our way. I do better with French and German.

Trivago commercials. That guy is way too creepy. Also most/all of the Liberty mutual commercials, especially the girl with the unhealthy obsession with 'brad', the car she totaled.

(I like captain obvious though).

A new pet peeve are people who don't keep their dogs on a leash where a leash is required.

Plenty of off leash parks and forests around, no need to go to the on leash parks/trails if you have no desire to use a leash.
