From what I can understand the Sky+ system relies/relied on the channel broadcasting the right signal to say "OK, here is (eg) EastEnders, start recording now", if that signal matched the program in your DVR schedule, so it works even if it's not on time. I seem to remember that for some of the non-terrestial Sky channels, it didn't work and that was blamed on the channel not having the right broadcasting equipment to send the right signal, not Sky+ DVR.

Obviously the US channels either use a different technology or haven't invested in the right equipment. I nearly gave up on the Good Wife as I'd only get half of it at a time.

Pet Peeve in general is how inefficient and difficult my Verizon DVR is compared to my old Sky+. Every time I want to watch a recorded programme now, I get a "FIOS upgrade" add I have to exit and then go into the DVR again. It's slow and unresponsive and has the capacity of a floppy disk, it's full with four HBO movies on there....

I'm on DirecTV..the boxes are amazing, 200 hours of HD. You can also attach an external drive if required.

I don't think they automatically extend recording though as that depends on integration with the broadcaster however there is an option for manually extending the recording time for a given broadcast, like the Oscars.

I wonder if a TiVO box has the same issue of not extending recording when a show goes over?

Re: Pet Peeves?

I would imagine it does have the same issue...the process requires some sort of integration with the broadcasters signal. If that level of cooperation exists I don't think it would be widespread.

I'm open to being corrected though...it was a handy feature in the UK.

Had it on my old VHS recorder.

A favorite annoyance in LA at places like Rite Aid, some Wells Fargo branches etc.

Learn something new. Have not seen validation machines in Portland. You need to get a person to stamp the ticket.

In LA you need a machine to replace a person to stamp the ticket.
Portland is so quaintly 20th century

People who park right at the tip end of the driveway, so it looks like they're trying to get out as you approach.

There's one pick up in particular that gets me every time :/

Parking garages which have pay machines on alternating floors which is never the one you parked at and parking stubs that need to be stamped to be validated, but because they weren't scanned mean you've got to show it to the valet...then you always have issues getting the machine to read the thing because it's been in your pocket and is no longer perfectly falt.

On my Comcast DVR, when I set a recording for the Superbowl, it knew that this was an event with the possibility of overrunning, and asked if I wanted to add more time. So obviously not all shows are treated the same. I also have the option somewhere to automatically add 5 minutes to every recording.
