A favorite annoyance in LA at places like Rite Aid, some Wells Fargo branches etc.

Never seen one of those (thankfully).

Credit card scanners
Every stores device seems to require a different "swiping position" (pardon my French) - and I never seem to get it right.

On a related note - being expected to "sign" one's name in a small box on a more or less vertical touch screen (that is not securely mounted) using a plastic stylus.

I suppose that the idea is so that your signature will look more like the scrawl that ends up on the impossibly small signature strip on the back of a credit card.

Everyone might as well just make an "X" for all the good it does.

I always do a random squiggle, and sometimes an X. It doesn't matter.

Whenever little Miss P is with me she signs for me! .... Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, BJ's, CVS, among others are ones where she has signed for me; no sales assistant has ever complained.

ETA In fact little Miss P can do the whole self scan, card swipe, sign routine with no assistance from me, I just give her my credit card to swipe when she has completed the scanning. It's even better than self-scanning, I have my own personal check-out assistant that comes with me from shop to shop. :)

"no sales assistant has ever complained"

I think it's outside their script parameters.

That's a pet peeve.

SA: Did you find everything you were looking for today?
Me: No. I wanted a pair of these in a size ….. and you only have them in a size ……
SA: (With bemused expression) Oh, I'm sorry about that.

Completely worthless conversation.

When I first came, I thought it was a genuine question too. I soon realized that it is just a weird formula with no meaning whatsoever.

Totally agree!
My usual response is exactly that, "No I didn't find everything since you don't have any!"

This is quite a specific pet peeve fleshed than a general one, but I hate how my U-Verse DVR box doesn't adjust if a programme over runs. Just watching the excellent Road To Ferrari, but because the F1 before it over ran slightly, it meant the programme started 5 minutes late. And so I haven't got the last 5 minutes recorded!! Not the first time this has happened either!! My old Sky+ box used to automatically adjust so over running programmed where always recorded fully! If Sky can do it, why the hell can't AT&T do it? Oh yeah, that's right, cause they are SHIT!!!!

Not that it's a comfort, but Comcast is as bad, if not worse.

At least you can record more shows at the same time and have access to a far faster internet connection! I hate my Uverse service, and trying to get Comcast to even talk about doing a plant extension to my neighborhood is like pulling teeth on a tasmanian devil!

I can record 4 channels at a time, which is enough for me, and my internet speed is pretty good. I just wish they would have a fluid EPG like sky so I do he miss the end of stuff. I don't think it's too much to ask of a service I'm paying big bucks for. It's gonna be a nightmare when the World Cup is on with games goings into extra time and penalties. I will have to remember to extend the recordings by an hour or so!

We have to offset / extend all of our recordings as the DVR constantly thinks it is 5 mins ahead / behind where it should be. The guide is slow as shit. Slow enough that channel hopping is impossible pretty much. Internet is good, when it's up.
