Re: Australian Anti-Semitism

Absolutely right. My white, English/Australian daughter had to put up with at school in Sydney. Luckily she just thought they were small minded and ignorant, but being told by your classmates to 'f...

Re: Australian Anti-Semitism

The younger generation must hear it from somewhere.

My friend in Melbourne posted this on fb in November because she said it made her ashamed to be Australian.

Re: Proud Mummy moment

It's a lovely feeling isn't it? My lot have scrapbooks with all their achievement awards in and I was looking at them not long ago. My middle daughter's first merit award in kindy was 'for being...

Re: Stumpy the Stingray butchered alive in front of kids

I agree that children should know where it comes from, but they don't need to know the gory details.
I was brought up on a farm and although I knew exactly how we got our meat, I would not have...

Re: Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother +

It's been the book of the week on women's hour on radio 4 this week (I missed it!). I did hear an interview with Amy Chua though. I thought there was quite a bit of 'back peddling' from her, but it...

Re: Found some decent bangers!

I was just talking about them this morning with my oh. If they're the same ones, they're the ones we used to buy in WA years ago, but we couldn't find them 'over east' (Sydney) a couple of years...

Re: Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother +

What does he think of that? I'm sure it's ok as long as he's as passionate about it as them and doesn't mind his life being run by them. If he wants to be a professional musician I suppose there's...

Re: Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother +

I haven't read it and don't think I will. I read an article she'd written for the Sunday Times and don't think I could cope with any more of it!

The idea that you can bring up well rounded...

Re: Found some decent bangers!

I can't remember whether it's here or Australia where I saw microwavable sausages.

SO wrong!

Re: Attitudes towards the english in general

Where does banter stop and bullying/xenophobia/racism start?

I can see that being called a 'Pommy %$*&^#@' can be seen as jokey banter. I'd find it boring after the first few times, but...

That's what he said. He's never really been responsible for the shopping before, but as he lives there by himself, he has to do his own and was oooing...

Re: Found some decent bangers!

Yes, we had the pork pie thing too! We weren't allowed to pass a farm shop without turning in "just to see what they've got"....:D........ and coming out laden down with meat products! It was very...

Re: Found some decent bangers!

My oh was the same when he came over at Christmas - he had a "sausage fest" for a whole month, trying every different variety from every butcher.
I don't think we've touched any since he left!

He...

Re: gifted ed. in u.k. compared with usa

If you have no luck with the grammar system have you thought about trying for scholarships or bursaries at private schools? Sometimes these can be very generous, if they really want your child. I...

Re: School year for a 15yr old

Yes, in 2008 it would have been. Sounds as though they've been swapping around for a while, but for my older two (sept 94 and May 96) it was Dec 31st cut off.
It was changed for those born in...

Re: School year for a 15yr old

It may have been this 20 years ago, but it definitely wasn't the case when we were there. It changed for children born in 1997. Only my youngest daughter was affected and she was born in 1998.

Re: School year for a 15yr old

I'm pretty sure she would be in year 11 in 2012. That's the year my middle one would be in if we were still there and she's 15 in May.
For children born the year later, the cut off date in WA...

Re: Back to Sydney after poor Perth

That's a real family area, so not much nightlife for a partying 28 year old! Not that it's something I would have been aware of, being older with three kids!
There is a station to get into the...

Re: Arrived back in UK a week ago, everything seems crappy

It does take a bit of adjusting to. I remember coming back from Perth after a few years and I felt exactly the same as you're feeling now.
The houses seemed small and I missed the open plan design...

Re: Killara, Sydney, NSW

We lived in Gordon, just. The next road was Killara.
It's green and hilly with lots of trees. There are nice houses with decent sized gardens. I loved walking around there, despite the hills!...

Re: suburbs in perth - advice please!

Snobbery is alive and well in the western suburbs. It wasn't the Brits telling me that I wouldn't want to mix with people in Joondalup (I didn't meet many while we lived in Nedlands), or anywhere...

Re: suburbs in perth - advice please!

Funny how perceptions change, isn't it? 12 years ago people though we were 'slumming it' moving from Nedlands to Wembley. Hillarys was about as far north as it got and, apparently no one in their...

Re: MS Megaswim

Wish the girls could join her again, they enjoyed it last time. Have you got a big team this year?
