[QUOTE=dave99;9139543]I arrived back a week ago and have been staying with family. It has been great seeing the family again but as I see more of the UK, everything just seems....crappy.

I guess its me thats changed because my home town of leicester hasnt changed much and yet it just looks a lot worse to my eyes.

Its hard to explain, the streets and houses are obviously small and more cramped looking and its been strange getting a car on the road and driving around here again. The more places I go the more crappy it seems

Its just after having seen so much incredible stuff in australia I am struggling to adjust again.
Going in country pubs that are tiny and like someones living room for a drink, when I think I could be in a massive casino instead.

not sure which part of aus you came back from but if it was Perth and your talking about the Burswood Casino...well boy oh boy Leicester must be a real dump if your prefer that Casino...lol....not sure why you wanted or reasons for your return to the u.k......I certainly would not want to return if I had the thoughts you had ie "Incredible stuff in Aus.."etc...it is Winter here and anywhere in Winter does not look the same.....you could either give it time and see if Spring etc helps or just hop back on that plane if you have nothing stopping you here.....I enjoy being home and I have my moments, not because I am in the U.K because I had moments in aus....it's human nature lol....good luck and all the best

Thanks for some great replys, I think you are all right that I might be suffering from culture shock. I hope you are right anyway.

I look around and I just wonder what the future holds here in the UK, a lot of peoples entertainment just seems to revolve around either watching tv or going out drinking. A lot of that obviously goes on in aus to but I always felt there were more opportunitys to do other things there.

I am job searching now and I guess a lot depends on how well that goes as to wether I stay. If I get something offered then I will give it a try, get setup somewhere and give it maybe 6 months.

I think what some people said about not making a rush decison makes sense, but it is difficult being back, I guess I am just not feeling like I thought I would.

I wish I had done some short trips back first, I was in perth 5 years and didnt come back once, maybe I built it up in my mind to be something it isnt and thats why things seem disapointing.

You must have left Perth for a reason?

You seem like a young guy ?? Sooo give it a year say and if it doesn't work for you head back to Australia and become a ping ponger like so many of us. LOL!!

It does take a bit of adjusting to. I remember coming back from Perth after a few years and I felt exactly the same as you're feeling now.
The houses seemed small and I missed the open plan design of the house we'd had in Perth. I missed the brilliant light and the sunshine. Everything here seemed brown and grey (and we came back in the middle of the best summer for years!).
Going to the coast meant grey sea and windbreaks!

However, it was a state of mind. I was looking at negatives. When I started looking more positively small houses became cosy, the countryside is beautiful and everything is so accessible. To find the diversity you get here you have to travel further in Perth.
I'm not sure this is making much sense, but here the school of our choice is walking distance from home, as is the city centre and a wood. I can be in the middle of the countryside in 10 minutes if I drive. If I want to drive the kids to school I can choose to live in a little village. It's easy. The beach is close enough for the few times in the year I want to visit (the seas still the wrong colour, but I can overlook that now!)

It depends what you want. If you're on your own with no ties and really don't want to be here, you can go back. My circumstances meant I had to get used it, but I do really like it here now.

I am wondering why I came back, and trying to fight the urge to jump on a plain back to aus.

Has anyone had a similiar feeling?
Its January (well, 1st Feb today) but trust me, everywhere in the western hemisphere feels and looks like crappy at the moment.

I think maybe you need to get some new friends

Seriously though, all my friends in the UK are constantly out and about doing things and it makes me really envious.

I do agree with everyone else to just let it sit for a while and then see how you feel. Last night I watched a show about people moving to Australia. They showed a couple who went over, loved it, decided to stay, then almost immediately gave up and came back to the UK. Now it's 2 years on and they're heading back to Australia. Bet they'll be back again!

Hi Brits 1

I was wondering how you were settling back in Stockport, have you been to many City games yet? I lived in Perth for 15 years and agree about the Burswood casino, what a horid place. I have lived on the Isle of Man for 10 years but have just bought a house in Bollington near Macclesfield and moving there in April this year........its a long story why i am moving but thats life as they say.....

I think people who are brought up to think pubs and tv is the highlight of their lives then thats what usually happens (not knocking anyone who enjoys that type of lifestlye) we were always encouraged to travel and take interest in sports and an outdoor lifestlye as well....a lot of my/our friends are the same...so its really up to you how you want to live your life...its not down to a country etc....if you like the outdoors etc go out and try something you think you'll enjoy...really there is plenty on offer here you just have to look and its not hard...heck my friend drives over to the east coast all weathers to surf....mad as a hatter lol...but it floats her boat....and as for short trips etc...you can never really tell unless you actually live somewhere just how good or bad it is.....if your getting really down about things as much as you are I would go as soon as I could because sometimes we just dont want to see the trees for the woods its easier...and there is nothing wrong with that....good luck

True,
Plus it's also the middle of winter when more people do veg out in front of the TV in a warm house after a day of work, what do you expect OP, clubbing every night and out door activities every day, it's flippin cold.
Lots of people spend too much over Christmas and need a couple months to get it all paid off, which is in time for Spring when they emerge again in time to play footie on the village green and then long summer nights sitting outside and enjoying a drink at the pub or a walk on the beach.

It's silly to suggest otherwise! You will find it in pockets in the UK and Australia. Infact, quite widespread.

Not a great result last night, three points would have been useful. I manage a couple of games a year at the moment but hope to go more once I have moved to Cheshire.

I love Glossop too, I have a cousin who lives there and was trying to persuade us to move to the area. I love the peak district national park and have spent many a day walking the hills....

I am sooo looking forward to moving to bollington, the locals call it 'happy valley' which is also the name of the local web site for the area. The people are very friendly and it has a great comunity feel. I have bought in the old part of the village in the conservation area oposite a farm and has great views of 'white nancy' fom the back.........
