Re: Any Aussie campers out there?

Done loads of camping in NSW/Victoria and never had a problem with snakes - though we've seen quite a few. As you said, most snakes avoid humans, and we've always tried to use common sense - not...

Re: pregnancy and birth in Oz

We had out first in London. Not that impressed with the hospital, but the GP care in the UK was great. Had the second in a Sydney public hospital and it was just the opposite experience: great...

Re: drive or fly from sydney to canberra?

By the time you've driven to the airport, parked, checked in and gone through security you could probably be in Canberra already. Last time I flew the flight was delayed 90 minutes (fog at Canberra...

Re: Where do Western Australians go for their holidays

We've found it's cheaper to go places in SE Asia like China than holiday in Australia or New Zealand. Especially at Christmas when every hotel, hostel and campsite jacks up the prices by 1000%. And...

Re: Aussie Newspapers

If you want to know what's really going on you have to read the independents like Crikey.com. the Monthly, etc. Like everywhere else in the world, newspapers in Australia are dying a slow death as...

Re: A policy Blair would have been proud of..

My 2 cents ... you get a different view when you meet these "scrounging illegal immigrants" in person. We know a wonderful Iraqi guy, George, who has now become "legal" after a nightmare five years...

Re: When does it start to get easier?

I think it starts to get easier after about the first six months. Looking back it's a bit joining the army: the process knocks you down and you have to rebuild yourself from nothing. The first few...

Re: Not welcome / Not belonging feeling

Maybe because I live in an area of Sydney that has high Asian population but I don't get that unwelcome vibe from second or third generation Aussies. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Like with the...

Re: Australian Air Force

Try the military ARSSE forums (www.arrse.co.uk) - they have quite a few RAF to RAAF threads.

Re: Bye Bye

Hi Jen,

I'd forgotten how hard it is during the first few weeks in Oz. We went through the same miserable process of house hunting and settling into unfamiliar areas etc - it DOES get better....

Re: Pronunciation and UK vs. Aus Grammar

Yeah wouldn't worry about it - most Aussies don't know how to pronounce strange names from other states - like Murwillumbah or my favourite Maribyrnong. Just don't call Melbourne Mel-born.

Re: chatswood - sydney - good location ??

I work in Chatswood. It's an OK place to work but I wouldn't want to live there. As someone said it's soul-less and shuts down at 6pm except for a few Chinese restaurants. It's a got a big Westfield...

Re: Flu Vaccines in Australia

Only one brand of flu vaccine (Fluvax by CSL) is in short supply. You should be able to get others like Vaxigrip, no problem.

Re: move to Penrith way - West of Sydney

I've heard Penrith gets pretty hot. If you're going to live that far out you might as well move up the hill to the lower Blue Mountains, places like Springwood, where it's cooler and greener, and...
