Re: Simon Schama - New Zealand/Australia Union

Interesting, but there is no need to worry, as there is no possibility of a union with Australia in the foreseeable future.

Maori (and many European New Zealanders) will simply not accept any...

...I went to look at a car I saw advertised on TradeMe. Knocked on the guy's door. He gave me the keys, and told me to take it for a test drive - no checking my ID, no leaving a credit card etc.

Re: New Zealand is really, really cool because...

Yes, unfortunately, NZ is beginning to change, especially the supermarkets.

When I arrived three years ago, my shopping was always packed for me at New World. After a year or so, the packers were...

Re: Rumour mill please...

Name suppression is taken very seriously for cases like this in NZ.

I suggest the moderators close this thread.

Re: Bright lights

Yes, there are NZ 'intellectuals' - at least as many as you'd expect from a country of 4 million people:

James K Baxter
Alan Brunton
Bernadette Hall
Sam Hunt
Hone Tuwhare
Robin Hyde...

Re: The strength of the kiwi$

There's an article about the strength of the NZ Dollar at interest.co.nz today. John Key and Alan Bollard explain why intervention is not an option. As I suggested above, they are actively pursuing...

Re: What do you need/need to do to buy a car in NZ?

Yes, a WOF (warrant of fitness) is like an MOT. You need to get them every 6 months for older cars.

Buying a car is quite easy.

The car should already be registered and have a current WOF (I...

Please consider the following:
- New Zealand is the 123rd most populous nation
- New Zealand has the 52nd largest GDP of any nation
- However, the NZ dollar is the 12th most highly traded...

Re: The strength of the kiwi$

Quantitative easing is what you do to create inflation (and lower the value of the currency) once you have already lowered interest rates as far as you can.

The RBNZ would want to lower interest...

Re: The strength of the kiwi$

The Kiwi dollar is a free-floating currency, so the NZ government cannot 'devalue' it.

The only ways to lower the value of the NZ dollar would be to lower interest rates (and that decision lies...

Re: New UK - NZ departure Tax

Yep, every country has airline taxes, it's just the UK one has risen substantially. I wonder how long before travel agents find ways to book flights to e.g. Dubai first (attracting a lower departure...

Re: The strength of the kiwi$

The problem is not the strength of the Kiwi dollar, it's the weakness of the pound (and US dollar). With UK interest rates at 0.5%, and the Bank of England threatening to print more money to bail out...

Re: NZ. 3rd best place in the world to live.

Re: Credit cards that earn air miles ?

Lots of my local cafes don't accept credit cards.

Quite right, too. As a cash/EFTPOS payer, I don't really want to subsidise other peoples' airpoints balances!

Re: Health care costs

I presume this is in a privately-run 'Emergency Clinic'? Hospital Emergency Departments don't charge.

Ambulance charges vary by region - they are free in Wellington.

Re: ANZ or BNZ???
