Re: Top 5 money-saving items to bring from UK??

Oh dear. This forum is becoming such a sad place. It used to be great, but now it's just full of people moaning. Really, why are you here when you just want everything to be exactly like the UK...

Re: Top 5 money-saving items to bring from UK??

I honestly couldn't disagree more. Having travelled all over the world, this has to be one of the least conformist societies I've come across.

Thank God! Getting away from these types of...

Re: Top 5 money-saving items to bring from UK??

A few things are cheaper.

The house buying process is much cheaper because there is no stamp duty.
Home alterations are cheaper, because it's much easier to alter a wooden shed than a solid brick...

Re: Wain !

Very heavy rain here overnight in the Waitakere's in West Auckland, but I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised by that. When it rains here, it REALLY rains.

About two weeks ago we had the joy of...

Re: TV, telephone & broadband recommendations

I started out with Orcon, paying about $140 per month for a package that included "free" landline calls to anywhere in New Zealand and the UK, plus 30GB internet per month. I was happy with the...

Re: Importing car from UK to NZ

I guess the risk is very low for such a short distance, but it's worth pointing out that it's still illegal to drive any vehicle on a NZ road at this stage, no matter what the distance is. Even if...

Re: Importing car from UK to NZ

You need to have owned it for at least a year. See here (http://www.customs.govt.nz/travellers/Motor+vehicles/When+no+Customs+charges+apply.htm).

Re: Importing car from UK to NZ

I recently brought a car with me.

The main problem I had was understanding the process. No one seemed to be able to tell me at the time, so I just took it one step at a time and it all worked out...

Re: Can immigration consultants guarantee this?

No one can absolutely guarantee success, unless maybe you've given them a lot of information already and you are an exceptional case who clearly meets all of the criteria?

Or do they mean that...

Re: UK emigration

I must admit that's something that's puzzled me a bit as well. I'm not sure whether they can use, for example, the tax office records for population counting purposes.

It certainly doesn't feel...

Re: nz mobile phone prices

As far as mobiles go, Vodafone UK, for example, is currently making about £1.3 billion per year in profit. Vodafone NZ is making about $120 million per year in profit, so I wouldn't necessarily see...

Re: nz mobile phone prices

As a bit of an aside, you do need to take into account the significant differences in the UK and NZ markets (as you already hinted at in your earlier post). The UK population is somewhere over 60...

Re: nz mobile phone prices

2degrees are cheaper than vodafone, but still expensive compared to the UK.

That sounds like an unusually cheap deal with Tesco though. I can't see that rate on their website - did you take...

Re: Anyone tried the New Zealand Air sky couches?

I personally think it's well worth getting a bit of extra space for such a long journey if you can afford it. I find a standard economy seat almost unbearable for that length of time. I've pre-booked...

Re: Job penrose so where do we live in Auckland?

I would also highly recommend the "Where to Live in Auckland" book available here (http://www.wheretoliveinauckland.co.nz/). We found it absolutely indispensable while house-hunting.

Re: Banking???

They will give you blank cards at the Post Shop to take away, and also post you cards with your name on (ours arrived in less than a week), so you can have immediate access to your funds and get...

Re: Any woosie's lit their log burners yet?

I don't have a log burner....but then I'm still in shorts and t-shirt here.

This is my first Autumn in NZ, and I think I'm still tuned into UK weather, so it still feels pleasantly warm to me!

Re: Best part of New Zealand

I agree that the only way is to have a look for yourself, and also consider where you can get work. One person's paradise is another person's hell!

Before coming here, I had convinced myself that...

Re: Some practical questions... white goods and cars

Also bear in mind when looking around that prices can be very negotiable here.

I've bought quite a few appliances since arriving here and I've easily got at least 20% off the shop prices on almost...

We also brought in masses of wooden furniture, both treated and untreated, included a lot of antique furniture. The shipping company told us we didn't have to declare any of it (although it's all...

Re: A quick question re Dentists

A bit off topic for this thread, but an agent here tells me that usually 50% of the commission goes to the real estate company, 25% goes to the agent who puts the house on the market, and 25% goes to...

Re: What Bank?..

We went with Kiwibank, and I've been surprised at how good it's been compared to my experience with UK banks.

We opened an account from the UK before arriving (one which has no account charges so...

In our case, none of those options! Our two 40 ft containers were both taken to the shipping company's depot about 15km away from the port (and in the opposite direction to where we needed it all...

Re: Shipping

We sent two containers over with Pickfords. We had a car in with the household goods in a 40ft container, so I would expect a motorcycle to be no problem.

For us, the quote was well below all the...
