Re: UK State Pension

I have just started looking at this and the impression I get is that although you may not be entitled to a huge UK state pension it may be worthwhile continuing to make contributions - you don't have...

Re: DEVASTATED!!! Help, need to make a decision!

I live in Adelaide, but would suggest Perth. Given that your husbands in the building industry I think Perth will come out of any recession faster than Adelaide - it went in earlier - and it is...

Re: Pension transfer

Sorry, I'm correcting myself - sadly this is quite common - GlobalPension do in fact cap fees and it is mentioned clearly in their website. Fees for advice + transfer apparently range from 3.5% to...

Re: Pension transfer

They may be, but their website says their fees are still 2.75% on pure transfer (min AUD990) and I don't see any cap mentioned? With advice the fees are even higher, and just get a commitment that...

Moving from Melbourne to Adelaide

Hi

We are on our way from Melbourne to Adelaide at the end of the year. Would really welcome some advice as to who would be the best removalists to use - quality and value for money wise. Apart...

Re: Pension transfer

A lot of the pension transfer "specialists" worry me and here are all the reasons:

1) The fees - one mentions that it is the lowest cost provider (it isn't by a long way .. where is Consumer...

Re: Cashing in ISAs and PEPs

My view would be that if you have been paying tax on the incremental (capital) gain every year - under FIF requirements - and this fully covers the gain then no further tax would be payable. FIF...

Re: Selling US shares in OZ

Hi

Try www.exfin.com, they put us onto a broker last year who sold some UK shares for us. Took about two weeks though, and they needed to see the original share certificates in the UK.

Cheers

Re: Schools

Only WA and Victoria have tables, and they only relate to final years results. But the SA government does collect them and makes them available to schools - so you can ask for a comparison of the...

Re: UK banks which are best to access from Aus

Thank you Gina .. much obliged ... hadn't thought of doing it that way. I will miss spending hours trying to get through to the Lloyds Branch on the phone and then trying to find someone who...

Re: UK banks which are best to access from Aus

We have an account with Lloyds TSB and have no problem operating internet banking as far as paying local bills etc., However, we have two other problems:

1) Occasionally they demand by letter (to...

Re: Canada to Oz

I "think" there's a limit - $A50,000 - below which you don't have to report RRSP's for FIF tax purposes - but please don't rely on this, I didn't have to research this area. We looked at advice from...

Re: Canada to Oz

Sorry, I am going to add a boring financial comment :( If you have an RRSP then you can access it ahead of time - there are withholding taxes payable but I believe they are reduced under the...

Re: superannuation funds

It's worthwhile looking at the public offer funds, such as AustralianSuper. The retail funds eg. BT/CFS are often "pushed" by financial adviser because they get a trail commission - they generally...

Re: Transferring Pensions - be careful

I think caution is correct; but don't discount the impact of "no tax" on income post 60 in any financial assessment. I had a report done by an Actuary - and I have some experience in this area - and...

Re: Transferring Pensions - be careful

Hi

I've just completed the process for two funds, so I'll make some comments purely on that (non-expert) basis:

1) I wasn't asked for my birth and marriage certifiactes and just like you I...

Re: Buying a house in Melbourne - costs etc ?!

I think this might help - if the link works - it's a buying and selling guide from the Victorian Consumer Affairs department. If the link doesn't work just go to http://www.consumer.vic.gov.au and...

Re: Transferring Pensions - be careful

Totally agree with the above analysis. I had the Actuarial analysis done and it showed that I was (very) much better of transferring the UK pension to Australia - the major driver was the tax free...

Re: pension transfers

I totally agree, I was trying to be "nice". One firm laid it on particularly thick - too bad there isn't a law against obvious "scaremongering":frown: Hopefully bad karma will follow them ..

It is not clear whether you are talking about private schools or government schools. As said, you will have to do a bit of research regarding the schools in the areas you mention - even fees for...

Re: pension transfers

Some (really) good news, I think. The firm doing my transfer has just sent me a link to an article in the UK which says that the HMRC have given the "green light" to pension transfers to Australia...

Re: british pensions

I don't think anything is actually "on hold" at the moment, or I hope so - it's just that anyone wanting (and able!) to put 1M Aussie in their fund has to do it before 30 June. Mine is certainly...

Re: UK Pension funds

Quite right, you will probably be caught by FIF rules (unless under 50K) - the only exception to FIF in the case of pensions is if they are "employer sponsored" funds. It's a stupid piece of...

Re: Global Pensions ?

I think that advice is correct for some people - particularly if they have just arrived and are 101% sure they are going to stay. As for me - my fund wouldn't transfer it for me and, because I had...
