We've just bought a property after being back a year & our mortgage advisor told us three years was the magic number. Only a handful of mortgage lenders will consider us out of the scores of...

Re: ok so tell me what we should not miss in the UK for Christmas trip...

We have been back for about 3mths now and one month in our own place with our own furniture & belongings in it, & despite some negative points like not knowing ones way around yet properly, still...

Re: An update.....

We arrived back on the 24th too, via Etihad. Been staying with my parents in Whitstable & I've been getting high on the British way on life - I'm really enjoying it before it gets to be everyday...

Re: Aussie drivers

Only if the roundabouts come with clear instructions! Here it seems to be whoever who is driving fastest towards the roundabout has right of way regardless of what direction they are coming from &...

Re: Words/expressions glad to leave behind

Re: Jervis Bay, NSW

Go for a self-catering place in Huskisson in walking distance of the main street/sea front - most places will be. There are two parks on the sea front, reasonable beaches & the bakery has an...

Re: This article should be compulsory reading for anyone planning to emigrate

Horses for courses & all that, but we quite often went on weekend breaks to Birmingham esp when they had cheap accomodation at Travelodge type places. Loved the Electric independent cinema there.

Re: This article should be compulsory reading for anyone planning to emigrate

This is similar to how I view the "no culture in Australia" point - in the UK I found the type of culture I enjoyed much easier to access through decent newspapers, radio, TV, pubs, restaurants and...

Re: Why do people get more colds chest infections in Oz

I thought Australia would be better for asthma cos less damp & cold & less furnishings like curtains & carpets in the houses to trap dust, but now I've been here I've learnt it's apparently worse due...

Re: Coles vs Tesco - I have done online shops

Well, there aren't any farms. I think the retailers come up from the coast or down from the mountains but it's not on the farm itself, with a nice tea room as well!! I was probably a bit spoilt at...

Re: Australian hospitality

I really don't get the convention of taking your own food/nibbles & drink to a gathering or even to a BYO restaurant & sticking to it, not sharing. I found this at mothers' group & children's...

Re: Here comes summer in the Gong...

Our neighbour hand feeds kookaburras (raw meat, yuk), lorikeets & king parrots which we get in the garden but it does have the drawback of also attracting the cockies which just attack anything they...

Re: Pumpkin Pie

You can get frozen pastry sheets, just cut into shape of your dish. Making a pie from a hollowed out pumpkin is good fun at Halloween. Once you've got the pumpkin flesh it's pretty easy to mix up...

Re: Here comes summer in the Gong...

I live just up from you in the Shire (not in a tent!) & in the summer we see a snake in our garden at least once a fortnight. Once even had one slither along the kitchen windowsill, outside...

Re: SUTHERLAND SHIRE or KELLYVILLE/ HILLS For family of 5

Engadine is one of the better suburbs in the Shire for groceries cos it has 4 supermarkets all in the centre (which is actually good when you get used to Aussie supermarkets!). Also it is on the...

Re: SUTHERLAND SHIRE or KELLYVILLE/ HILLS For family of 5

The Shire is very good for family life but it is very quiet, almost a separate part of Sydney cos it's southernmost & separated by a river. Do you mean you are not used to a quiet life as in a quiet...

Re: Cost of giving birth in Oz?!

You are probably better off with a private obs for the reassurance factor if you have a known risk factor. I was told I was high risk for the second & have had to go to a different public hospital...

Re: Bath/Bristol...or Oxfordshire?

Re: Curious.... 2-3 year blues?

In my experience it has got worse as my son has got older because there are so many changes in the early years that family are missing out on, even if they do visit it's not the same as being able to...
