Yes, but Jonny was speaking as a soon-to-be-immigrant and as someone who has not yet left for Canada. Perhaps these sorts of issues are best thought about BEFORE one arrives in Canada!

You can stay in Canada as a visitor for 6 months (to stay longer you need to apply for extension of this visitors visa). To be sponsored as a spouse it can take anywhere from 6 months to over a year...

I think you might have to, I'm afraid. We didn't have to travel far - from York to Leeds, but if it means your application can be sent in before X-mas, then it's worth it.
