As far as I remember the South african side are more interested in how the passport was obtained as different rules apply. Either way I was a British citizen by descent and was still required to fill...

I contacted the uk passport service ( try [email protected]) or phone 01733 - 888242 (bearing in mind this was 2005 and numbers may change).
I simply asked them to confirm in writing...
