I'm going to guess that that EdwardVIII and probably Wallis Simpson lived the last 20+ years of their lives in Paris on some kind of a diplomatic visa too.

Makes sense, but there must also be a waiting-processing time for a diplomatic visa too. Diplomatic status has to be granted by the US government to the incoming diplomat.

Global entry card would do the trick in this case. Although when it comes to flying and all the security/tsa/police you can encounter at the airport, it might be just safer to carry the green card.

10 or so years ago I saw Ray Bolger's(scarecrow Wizard of Oz) passport on eBay. I don't know how much it went for. There are a lot of estate sales passports on eBay.
