Indeed. The Sunshine Skyway was hit in 1980 and partly collapsed. The replacement bridge's support columns are protected by what they call 'structural dolphins'. Wikipedia has some nice photos of both old and new Skyway bridges. The old bridge does not appear to have any protection at all from collision.
