One thing you can do to rule out a leak is a "bucket test". Place a 5L bucket on your pool steps, put water in to fill it about half way and adjust the water level or bucket placement on the steps...

There must be a cover that you can take off. Plastic covers pry off, some with difficulty. Wood covers usually need to be unscrewed.

Thanks for the info but I don't think any of that applies here. There is a lot of open space and the soil is like beach sand. In the eighties property owners sold the sand to construction companies....
