Re: Dubai economy?

I noticed a few of my Western connections (mostly in finance) in LinkedIn from back in the day in Abu Dhabi have moved to Riyadh. Working for the PIF, Neom, Qiddiya, etc.

Re: Is the dream dead?

I worked in AUH for two years just after the GFC. I left in 2011.

I was taking a look the other day at job offers. I was shocked. Salaries (including major local companies or international...

Re: 48 h/week, is it worth it

I worked in Abu Dhabi for 2 years and did the 48 hour thing.

However I am surprised that if you are in a six-figure salary in Canada you are doing 40 hours. I have worked in Europe and the US and...

Re: Worst holiday destinations

We were in Warsaw last summer and we loved it. Everybody had told us that there was nothing to do and it was ugly but I had a blast; I loved the metropolitan vibe. I personally liked it much more...

Re: How is business?

Dubai is heavily dependent on tourism and business from neighbouring oil-dependent countries, so if there is an oil downturn, Dubai hotel industry will be affected directly.

So much for the "Dubai...

Re: How is business?

I actually know a couple of people here in Brussels that have gone to UAE for New Year's.

Something I have noticed lately is that price for plane tickets from Europe to the Middle East (not only...

Re: How is business?

I completely understand the logic. That happens all over the world; carriers make you pay more for the convenience of going non-stop.

What I was trying to say is that Qatar Airways selling tickets...

Re: How is business?

There are many airlines tapping into the same market: Emirates, Etihad, Qatar and Turkish. The cake is probably too small for everyone to eat from.

A good price can make miracles. I know a few...

Re: going to Israel FROM Doha and back

I think you are overthinking. I would fly. Royal Jordanian, Egyptair or Turkish would do the trick. Also buying an 'odd' route could be understood from Israeli or Qatari authorities like you are...

Re: Looking for EU version of Los Angeles - climate, culture

For me weather is worse because in Cote d'Azur in winter is COLD. Period. Costa del Sol in winter is much warmer. Not tropical warm, but noticeable.

As for the cost, you are right. But bear in...

Re: Looking for EU version of Los Angeles - climate, culture

You should check Costa del Sol. I have been a few times to LAX and I would say it is what resembles the most. Even though I would say the closest comparison is South Florida.

In Costa del Sol you...

Re: U.S. government to investigate subsidies to Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways

Well you can say it is common sense.

The US and the European Union have Open Skies because they are somehow "equal".

However, Qatar and the US. What is the advantage that the US has having...

Re: U.S. government to investigate subsidies to Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways

The US and UK are two of the few countries with open skies policies with the UAE and Qatar.

Canada, France, Germany or Australia don't have such policies. I suspect the US carriers just want to...

U.S. government to investigate subsidies to Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways

This is interesting. Those airlines are very important to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar. I would say their "brand ambassadors" to the world.

U.S. to chart new territory in Gulf airline subsidy review...

Re: Why are white people expats when the rest of us are immigrants?

I agree it is an old term.

What are those white people from Kosovo that are fleeing their country?

And those wealthy Chinese moving to Vancouver to enjoy a higher quality of life?

Re: good offer or not?

Re: good offer or not?

20000 SAR is 3500 GBP a month, so in fact you are earning less in gross.

And being from Sri Lanka, that would be a big shock for both you and your family.

Re: The thread about ridiculous Dubai ideas

But part (or most) of the attraction of Dubai for foreigners (at least those from Western countries) are those things that make Dubai "crazy".
