Re: A little rant fulled by Tequilla

Sorry you had a run-in with rude parents. I don't think you're unreasonable to expect some parents to stay -- and if they don't stay, to pick their child up promptly. My 8 year old had an...

Re: How long have you lived in your new country?

Been here 18 years now; spent 11 years in Texas (San Antonio/San Marcos), just over 2 years south of the Twin Cities, Minnesota and now over 4 years in southeast Virginia.

Re: Pre-school and fees

Ditto here in VA in certain circles re: competitiveness. Also, it's true to say that just because a school costs more, doesn't always mean it is better (let's say I've learnt from experience :).

Re: Pre-school and fees

Virginia does have state preschool, but I believe that it is income-based. I know that our local public school has a pre-K 4 program and there is some sort of state daycare just around the corner...

Re: High Fructose Corn Nightmare...

Sadly, my sister-in-law's son, who's only 11 or 12, has to go in for a kidney stone op in the next week or so. He's seriously overweight, fueled by overeating (especially raiding the fridge at...

Re: Whatcha all doing this weekend?

Looking forward to OH and eldest daughter's return from Texas. OH has only been gone for 4 days, but my 8-year old has been at her grandparents' for a month.

Re: Parents of School kids

Speaking as a worker in an before- and after-school program, the budget in this program does not pay for much extras. I probably spend about half of what I earn (which isn't much!!) on arts and...

Re: Bugs and beasties?

I wasn't keen on the bugs in South Texas -- everything really is bigger there, from roaches to stick insects!! When we first lived in San Antonio, we rented a house that was right on the outskirts...

Re: Parents of School kids

My kids go to local parish school, so I expect to buy supplies. Didn't realise that the public schools make you buy stuff too :o

Re: Parents of School kids

eek -- That's quite a list there. Second graders at my kids' school have the following supply list:

1 supply box
1 box #2 pencils
4 glue sticks
1 box of tissues
3 pocket folders
1 black...

Re: My first US road rage incident...

No-one else has mentioned it, so I will. If you're in the wrong lane, what's so bad about taking that right turn and then turning back around. It would definitely be the safer option :)

Re: food safety course questions

I would call your local Health Department and TABC to check if the online courses qualify. I have a food handler card for Virginia and had to take a short class at the school where I work. All it...

Re: Hampton Roads ?

Well, that really makes sense  I didn't realise that it would be a direct line. Still, I suppose it's progress that light rail is even in the picture.

Portsmouth is nice in the area the...

Re: Hampton Roads ?

The light rail to Virginia Beach is going to take a while before it's up and running.

Re: Brats - and i dont mean those awful toys

Maybe it's the company you keep  Or perhaps I've been lucky as I've never had kids here help themselves to stuff in my fridge and for the most part, I get thank yous -- if the kids themselves...

Re: Asking for part-time

Hi, Shalaxh, I really sympathise. I'm here to tell you it can be done. I had a full-time job as an executive assistant with a commute of an hour each way. I had planned to come back full-time 9...

Re: Homes and Schools in Minnesota!

It's been a few years since I lived in Minnesota (left in 2003), but we lived in Hastings, which is right next to Cottage Grove. I enjoyed living in Hastings, but I commuted to downtown Minneapolis...

Re: Everybody is ill!!

Respiratory infections have been here in SE Virginia too, though the worst seems to be over. Early this year, DH, youngest daughter and I all had bronchitis; others had the same or pneumonia. Hope...

Re: neighbours?

Hi, Shazza777, my inlaws have lived in Killeen since 1980. One of the problems seems to be that because the majority of people are connected to the military, neighbours are always changing and it's...

Re: wife crashed the car

That's what I was thinking. Just because someone has a light that has just turned green, doesn't mean they can go if the road ahead is not clear.

Re: Medical Insurance madness and Babies

I was amazed at this. Granted, it was some 8 years ago, but the hospital I gave birth in gave free pre-natal classes and a tour of the hospital. When I was expecting baby #2, the hospital...
