Re: Dilemma.....advice on an area in Halifax, NS

Edgy, up-and-coming...!

It isn't the area for everyone, but if you are interested in a downtown location with ethnic restaurants/shopping, a few good pubs and easy access to Halifax core, it's a...

Re: Best cell phone plan/monthly in Canada?

Oh dear... cell phone charges are a very sore point in Canada!

There is a new player on the market, Wind, that are promising lower pricing. I wonder if they are in Ottawa yet?

Re: Can your container contain ANY food stuff?

Now who would put wet cheese in a shipping container...!

I brought a lot of spices with me (not in original containers, I must admit) but then found I could buy the same stuff at the local Indian...

Re: Paying back student loan

The SLC is useless! Apparently my loan was transferred to another company and they didn't even bother telling me. But to defer my loan I still had to go through them... and I ended up with letters...

Re: OMG!!!! How crap is the pound!!!

The Canadian dollar rate is bewilderingly low, and the Euro is 1.10 to the pound - there goes my dream Spanish villa idea! :p

Re: Anyone had any experience of renting property when you have pets?

I work for a property management company, and a majority of our rentals will allow for pets on request. I think it depends what type of rental you are looking for - an apartment or short-term rental...

Re: Holidays in Nova Scotia

The 'nice' weather can stretch way into late September in NS - I was still sunning on the beach then! A lot of locals say it is the nicest month of the year, although the evenings can get a bit cool.

Re: Vegetarian and Quorn

As well as Quorn, I wish I could buy Morningstar products - they are only available in the US. Their veggie bacon used to be available in the UK (I think they got into trouble for using GM soy and...

Re: Credit cards for newbie

Once you have your credit established, your credit allowances will go up and up and up... I have far more access to credit here than I ever did in the UK. :D

Re: Decision made

I agree with the other posters. You've come too far and spent too much money! Land, then go back to the UK. And on the vacation front, I had a job that had 4 weeks' vacation (in Halifax) so it's not...

Re: Credit cards for newbie

It's not that easy - we had a long credit history with HSBC in the UK and we had to beg them for a $1000 credit card!

I found the most sympathetic bank to newbies is TD - they may only offer a...

Re: Day trip from Halifax in winter?

Ooh yes, seconded, I go there regularly. A very cozy place in the winter (just don't sit too close to the doors, otherwise you get blasted with cold air!)

Also worth a look is Tom's Little Havana,...

Re: The Cold

When I lived in downtown Toronto I used to walk to work every day - I'd only consider taking the streetcar if it dropped below -10! As long as you wear the right clothes, it can actually be quite,...

Re: Touring Ontario with an RV. Comments please

We've travelled across Canada many times in a 28' RV we bought for $20,000 (for that price we thought it would last a few months at best, but it just kept on going!) You should have no problems...

Re: Day trip from Halifax in winter?

You can't go wrong with a trip to th South shore, it looks particularly beautiful on a winter's day. Shoot down the highway to Lunenburg then drive back via the coast road past Mahone Bay, Hubbards,...

Re: It's been a few months...

If your wife is experienced in admin, she should sign up with as many temp agencies as she can. They work a little differently here than in the UK as the jobs often lead to long-term posts - I had...

Re: Socialised healthcare..... really?

My UK dentist would take one look at my teeth, say "Great!" and she'd usher me out within a minute.

When my Canadian dentist looked inside my mouth, he had a fit. A filling my old dentist had done...

Re: Moving back to UK

:D

Ironically, we found the English cheese they export to Superstore is nicer than the cheese we bought in the UK. I don't understand that. OK, it is twice the price, but anyway...

$20 gets you...

Re: Also thinking of risking it (all)

Been there, done that, I was in the last movie. :)

There's plenty of jobs around for low pay ($8-10 an hour), which are fine in the very short term, but if you have a good attitude and a...

Re: Best areas to live Halifax?

Over here, that's called 'entrepreneurship'. :D

Seriously though, compared to where I lived in the UK, this is the most crime-free place I've ever lived!

Re: Also thinking of risking it (all)

The music scene in Halifax is small but thriving - a lot of local indie bands, festivals like the Halifax Pop Explosion, Dead of Winter festival etc. And we got McCartney and KISS playing here this...

Re: Migration Agents

We used Access Migration about 4 years ago - I can't remember the costs exactly, but it was nowhere near 1900+VAT! I know another couple who used them and they were happy enough with the service.

Re: Best areas to live Halifax?

It's probably quicker to list the places "not" to live in! Spryfield isn't the best area of town, and the Gottingen area of Halifax is probably more suited to folks looking for 'edgy' urban living...
