Hi,

Lighter question from me this time.

I'm struggling to find veggie meat alternatives since arriving. The last stuff from No Frills and from Wallmart smelt and tasted a bit like the dentist and went straight in the bin. Where can I get a nice tasting veggie burger or veggie sausage, like Linda McCartneys or Qourn? Is quorn available here, under the counter perhaps? I'm a good cook with many recipe books coming over in a crate (if it ever gets out of Toronto- was in Montreal) but sometimes I crave pre prepared veggie fast food!

From previous posts here it is apparent the Qourn is not available in Canada in any way shape or form, over the counter or under.

I used to eat Quorn when on diets back in the UK, the stuff you get here is just nowhere near the same - daughter became a fish eating veggie (Pescatarian is that right Bells???) this summer and the stuff I buy doesn't even smell nice sometimes but she eats it, I tend to try to add beans and pulses because imo they taste nicer than the fake stuff.

Anyhoo, Bells will be along I'm sure to give some pointers to good tasting veggie stuff.

Having tried the stuff only once or twice I tend to agree but then I am not vegetarian.

You can buy Quorn products and tofu at our local Atlantic Superstore (rural NS) so I am surprised its not available in larger towns and cities in other provinces

If you can't manage to cook and eat a veggie diet without eating meat substitutes then you are failing as a vegetarian. IMO

I've seen Tofu in Superstore but not Quorn and I couldn't see it on the site linked.

The Vegetarian Society has given Quorn its seal of approval.

Even though I used it instead of meat sometimes, I never thought of it as a meat substitute. I used to buy the chunks or minced version and I found that whatever I cooked (curries, casseroles etc) tasted better than if I'd simply not used it.

It seemed to absorb flavours in a way the other ingredients never did.

Rather like meat in fact...so I guess that does make it a meat substitute.

Although haven't seen quorn in Atlantic superstore I have found in the fresh produce with the Yves stuff other veggie stuff to try and OK although I do prefer Quorn. In the freezer section they do have a couple of other choices in burgers, meatless meatballs etc which can be hit or miss

Oh no, 31 years as a veggie and I've failed, never mind, I'm still a big fan of quorn , it has it's place.

I think you have if you have to supplement natural foods with man made ones, and search out meat substitutes. Aren't vegetables good enough for you?

Anyone who finds Linda McCartney Products and Quorn tasty has failed on more counts than being a vegetarian.

Bit unfair. There can be many reasons for not eating meat. Since moving back here I am aware of how much harder it is to find free range, ethically raised meat. It does exist, but is not available to the same extent as in the UK - and free range eggs are a real challenge. Organic is around, but I'm more of a Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall chap and tend to be more concerned about the farming practices. Although I am far from being vegetarian I could envisage giving up meat for these reasons - in which case I would want a meat substitute as I like it. I don't eat bananas anymore either as there are no free trade to be easily had. Luckily I found a black market egg supplier for proper free range from hens that actually get to go outside. I'm really not obsessive about these things, and it was nice in the UK to be able to easily exercise some choice in regular supermarkets.

Cheap seems to be the dominant thing in Canadian supermarkets rather than quality or ethical concerns. How many chopper, basic, no frills, piles of crap shops does one country need?

I really miss Waitrose. Not just the quality and choice, but the whole way they do business.
