Re: Why did you leave Canada to move back to the UK

Moved a few years ago from BC. Main reasons are:
- cost of living in Vancouver area not sustainable
- potentially high cost of healthcare that MSP doesn't cover
- employment in my field being...

Re: Is now the time to buy Dollars?

One thing you can do is set up a trigger where you agree to buy a certain amount of currency at a rate you specify. You are obviously contractually bound but the nice thing is that currencies can...

Re: Rent without job

Yes sure. I was just making the point that if someone had to put up that much of a bond it should be them wanting to run a credit check on the landlord and not the other way around. I realize the...

Re: Rent without job

Sounds a bit ridiculous to me. Nobody has more than a month's assurance in their employment, so in real terms the risk of a person who has been employed 25 years compared with one yet to look for...

Re: monthly rental homes in Manchester -- rents seem low

You'll do really well for that kind of rent in many pleasant parts of UK. Manchester area is very good value and except for a few locations you'll be able to find a safe pleasant place, a good size...

Re: Buying a car in the UK

Here's a really offbeat thought. Do a search for british TV documentaries focusing on car crime particularly fraud. There's quite a few on sites like 'the box.bz'. This will really open your eyes to...

Re: Wife in the UK whilst husband lives in the USA - can this work?

Seems to be like that with everything. Brits seem to get a raw deal compared with their US counterparts. We get made to jump through hoops to get what they get served up on a plate. Look at the...

Re: Leaving for the UK from the US in a few weeks - Selling Electronics and Stuff

Kijiji for sure - Craigslist is absolutely rife with scams and con artists. I have had a 100% failure rate with Craigslist, with a massive population of utter time wasters, and near 100% success rate...

Re: Anyone lived in Dunstable, Bedfordshire

Hello,

I have driven through many times and cannot comment on life there. It's certainly a good strategic place to live for transport as you say. Luton is a stone's throw away and station there...

Re: Will you still emigrate when the Canadian recession kicks in?

You're making a big mistake. There's way too many who come out to Canada who have nothing but bad feeling for UK. That's not a reason to emigrate somewhere, least not Canada. There's significantly...

Re: If you can't sell your house...

No idea on the house sale agents. I'm sure they are making a lot of money out of people in your position, so it's not going to work in your favour so much.

Realtors here are pretty focused on what...

Saw the strangest thing on Monday

I was on a slip road coming off a dual carriageway and a cyclist close ahead who suddenly realized he didn't intend to exit, decided to rejoin the main carriageway crossing 2 lanes of fast moving...

Re: Advice Please - Exchange Rates

If you look at historic rates, you'll notice that the present exchange rate has been low for a long time, and in fact it's marginally better for your than it has been over that time (converting GBP -...

Re: Went back to the UK for 3 weeks and.......

I've never much understood that expression. Yes I know people relate it to whether people are positive or negative, but I find it a weak analogy.

Saying the glass is half empty, is a sign of one's...

Re: Citizenship test

So you haven't heard the Canadian expression "You Gotamal!" I assume. Roughly translated it means "You failed, jackass" or something similar

Re: Help me buy decent tea and cheese without going bankrupt!!

Yes this stuff is the dog's knackers. I bought 10 boxes when it was on sale thinking the regular price was $12 or something, but $7 is a bargain and it's strong enough that a tea-bag will make 2...

Re: Help me buy decent tea and cheese without going bankrupt!!

You should also look to the US for much better pricing on most things, especially cheese. There are import limits but these are fair, although the $20 dairy limit per person could be eaten up quicker...

Re: Help me buy decent tea and cheese without going bankrupt!!

Just because he's moved country doesn't mean he should abandon all the things he likes. Look at immigrants in UK. They live their lives as if they never left their homeland, especially when it comes...

Re: Turnaround of events (short story, but factual)

Yes it was you who said that. Hopefully people won't mind the read to get to that point, although the post was a bit longer than I'd anticipated.

Yes I heard about 10 year versions but not going to wait. Also will do the drop-off of app and pick up of PP as you suggest. I'm sure Canada Post often leaves packages behind and just carries a...

Turnaround of events (short story, but factual)

People on this forum often say an employed immigrant is a happy one. One of the biggest struggles in emigrating is finding a job, but another is finding and maintaining sustainable income. In places...

Yes a matter of days after yours. Thank God it wasn't quite the wait that we'd prepared for. What I didn't much like is that I was expecting some kind of congratulations. I mean, yes you have to...

Re: This networking thingy in Toronto

Yes but they do harp on about Canadian work experience, which to an immigrant would appear to be bias, although bias toward residents not specifically Canadians. But I just don't get Canadian work...
