Re: Melbourne help

Depends on your budget. It also depends on lifestyle.

Here are my suggestions, based on my experience as an academic and having worked at Melbourne University (now at La Trobe Uni).

For young...

Re: Rubbish clothes?

I also found clothes to be generally better quality and cheaper in the U.K.

I can only speak in terms of what it's like in Melbourne. For the most part, it's one extreme to the next. It's either...

Re: Why do shops close on days off or after work ? Perth

A large number (maybe all of them?) of Coles supermarkets here in Melbourne are open 24 hours 7 days a week. In my area (Brunswick), our local Coles if often teeming with people at midnight,...

Re: Westpac - is this correct?

We still have 3 options at all EFTPOS outlets (supermarkets, etc.) and ATMs - savings, cheque, or credit.

If you are using a Westpac Debit Mastercard then you will never have to select "credit"....

Re: Need help deciding on Melbourne job offer.

Gareth,

Your take home pay will probably be higher than $800 per week. We have something here called salary packaging and all the universities allow their staff to opt into it. It's a little...

Re: Melbourne/Adelaide/Sunshine Coast???

The thing about Melbourne is that it is a hard place to "get" simply by visiting it. You can come here for a couple of weeks, do all the touristy things, and then conclude it's just another city or...

Re: Will private health care be cheaper?

As I mentioned on another thread, it is definitely worth getting "extras" cover. This costs less than hospital insurance and covers you for dental, optical, physio, natural therapies, etc. I use...

Re: MELBOURNE 2009

I am a former student of Melbourne University and lectured there for a couple of years when I graduated. It is arguably Australia's top university and one of the oldest. A degree from Melbourne...

Re: Medicare, u still need Private Insurance ?

You don't need private hospital insurance. The public hospital system here us first rate and very similar to the NHS. If you need treatment, you are served by the excellent doctors and nurses, and...

Re: Our Cost of Living in Melbourne

A very helpful thread. Nice work, gsidhu.

I noticed you are renting and located on the outer edges of Melbourne. I own my home and live in inner Melbourne (Brunswick), so I thought I'd post up my...

Re: British Economy 2009 : Is it really that bad ?

I agree about the media. Not sure about the UK as I am living here in Australia, but even the media here are ramping up the doom and gloom scenarios, obviously trying to create fear and sell more...

Re: ** Perth vs Melbourne - your views, please **

This is an overstatement.

Melbourne's average maximum in July (winter) is 13 degrees while London's average max. in January (winter) is 7. Melbourne's average maximum in January (summer) is 26...

Re: Really struggling with heat in Perth

That's not true. Our system draws up 12 litres of water and hangs onto it for several days. It only dumps that water when the system hasn't been used for 3 days.

I don't even notice it in our...

Re: ** Perth vs Melbourne - your views, please **

It all depends on what kind of lifestyle you want, but based on your list of preferences, clearly Melbourne would be a far better pick than Perth (and Adelaide).

Here's a list to get your...

Re: Really struggling with heat in Perth

That sounds like portable evaporative cooling. It makes some difference but it's not great. A proper portable aircon unit is better, but it also costs more and not so great for the environment...

Re: Really struggling with heat in Perth

Actually, the most popular form of cooling in Melbourne is ducted evaporative cooling, which is now everywhere here. It works VERY well in our climate and only costs around 3-4 cents per hour to cool...

Re: has the recession hit

Australia is doing well so far. There's lots of talk in the media about a big rise in unemployment during 2009, but some of this may just be fear-mongering, which the media love to do. Right now...

Re: A Place in the Sun Down Under

After living in Australia, then the UK, and now Australia again, I think the TOTAL cost of living is about the same, maybe a little cheaper in Australia.

I found groceries only slightly cheaper...

Re: Too little in savings to emigrate?

Catherine, setting up in a permanent location with £2000 would be very difficult - bond, rent in advance, furniture, food, etc. - plus a gap between your husband starting work and then actually...

Re: Which city?

The threat of bushfires is a drawback in these areas because of all the trees, but the fact is there hasn't been a fire that has caused damaged for many, many years, and tens of thousands of people...

After spending a few years living in the UK then coming back to Oz a couple of years ago, I would say supermarket food is slightly more expensive here in Oz than Tesco but cheaper than Sainsburys....

Re: Which city?

Neither city is especially conservative, although I would say Melbourne is more left wing than Sydney overall. The inner area of Melbourne is predominantly left-wing, especially in the northern...
