Re: Canada's Mennonites

Lots of Mennonites, and Hutterites, in eastern Alberta.
I even came across a colony of Mennonites when I lived in Mexico - descendants of those who left Manitoba in the 1920's, attracted by cheap...

Re: Canadian slang

A personal favourite, out here in the West, is "beaky" - meaning 'lippy', 'smart-mouthed', impertinent etc.

Re: 24 years but who would go back to the UK?

Re: Passport Place of Issue

I would say that is sufficient - UK passports are issued by a central authority that does not disclose its physical location.

Re: NB seniors no longer allowed to drive before 9 am., between 3 and 5 pm

Funny - wonder if it applies to other Provincial capitals?
That comment sections was a blast; clearly, they didn't read The Manatee's disclaimer.

Re: Renting in Calgary

My 2c worth, as someone involved with property rentals.
The biggest difference between the UK and Alberta is that you have NO security of tenure. If the L/L decides he doesn't want to renew your...

Re: Temporary Car Insurance in UK with Canadian License

Well, that 7-day quote seems reasonable. I was in the UK in July this year - a week's car hire, with unlimited mileage, was nudging a thousand quid!

Re: Which Internet Service Provider Do You Like in Canada?

If you're in Calgary, you might want to take a look at Moby; a decent 1Gb alternative to Telus.

Re: How To Set Up Utilities In Canada? (Alberta-related issue)

As others said, it helps to know where in Alberta (a province around 3 times the size of the entire UK) you intend to live.

In Edmonton, you only have a choice on gas - electricity and water are...

Re: Canada is a scam

Many years ago, while living in Mexico, I had an American friend (an oilman) who was of the opinion that the majority of folk in any given country were 'psychologically unsuited' for migration - in...

Nine Years Today.

In October 2012, I crossed the land border in Houlton, ME into New Brunswick - a new life in Nova Scotia awaited. It was tough, and different, and a challenge. Nine years later, I have just started a...

Re: First stages of planning, 2023!

Like dbd33 said, the O&G sector is cyclical - we've been on a down-slide since 2014/15, and what little recovery there was has been halted by the cancellation of Keystone XL, the takeover of Husky...

Re: Canada might be getting 10 days paid sick leave

Even without a Provincial mandate, I know that some larger employers (such as mine) have increased the paid sick-leave entitlement due to the WuFlu.
We now get 10 days and, predictably, folk are...

Re: A Handy Guide to Measuring in Canada

When I lived in Mexico, the US influence was also strong. In construction, there was much use of the 'metric inch' (25mm); a piece of lumber measuring 50x100mm was, invariably, 'un dos por cuatro'.
