It's been a good weekend, the frightmare that was a fortnight ago is but a distant (if uncomfortable) memory.

I now bask in the the post match warmth after we have totally outclassed the league leaders and added another 3 points to the relegation avoidance total.

Henderson looks like a very promising player. Hopefully the England call up doesnt spoil it. The debacle at St James seems to have brought a positive reaction out of them all

Turning point - they got lucky at Spurs with that Zenden non-pen. Webby specialises in them.

Before that Brucie had ten losses ont trot in the capital.

Spurs were lucky to hang on for a draw in that match in the end. I see that Bruce had gone 24 matches in the capital without a win before yesterdays result.

We're coming good slowly but surely. Having played Manure, Citeh, Arsenal, Chelski, spurs and Liverpool and coming away with 2 wins, and 4 draws.

Even SAF said we were the best side united had played this season.

Footie related article in tomorrows Observer. The guy's nuts but I think it's interesting that people are rejecting the corporate model in favour of community at last.

Oh, Sorry:unsure:

So the question is, is Martin O'Neil stupid enough to take the poisoned chalice?

I get the impression that move was on the cards until about a month ago when Newcastle won the derby and had a few other good results, so it was postponed for the sake of appearances.

I think the bookies suspended betting on him getting the sack just before the Sunderland match.

Martin O'Neil is the obvious candidate but there are a few wildcards in the list below.

Out of that lot, I'd offer Gordon Strachan or Alan Pardew the job, but insist they choose their own deputy.

Most Toon fans seem to think Pardew is a mate of Ashley's, they're already slitting their wrists I believe.

Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread

The only way Ashley would not get lynched is to bring in someone with top flight credentials as a replacement. Even he must see that another midtable work horse wont cut it.

ONeil is really the only viable available option (until Woy H gets the boot) when taking into account the reason given for ditching poor Chris Huyton was a need for greater premiership experience. Others like Curbs or Pardew have some, but not at a high level as ONeil. I suspect it was a done deal some time ago to be honest.

I think this comment on the Chronicle website summed them up well:

Clark fails the experience test, if the press release is to be taken seriously
Strachan has just failed at Boro, which makes him unlikely
Kinnear has the relationship, but would be a barely believable choice
Maradona fails the experience test, is a nutter and too much of a risk
Pardew is a loser, not a winner, on track record
Shearer fails the experience test
Only O'Neill makes any sense on this list.

Certainly a failed smoggie manager wouldn't go down well. Pardew has never done much.

I can't believe they sacked him.

He took them back to the Premiership and had them sitting comfortably mid-table spending very little money in the process.

O'Neill won't take it- the reason he left Villa was because the chairman refused to give him additional funds to strengthen. He wants to manage a club capable of winning the premiership and where is provided with the resources to do so. Everybody knows Mike Ashley is not the chairman to help a manager realise that dream.

It'll be Curbishley or Pardew.

With out funds to strengthen the squad no manager will take over from Hughton and outperform him.

I agree he wont take it without total control and some funds.

You can argue Newcastle have the potential to make enough money that they can compete for the top prizes, they have many things in their favour, huge local following, decent stadium, no other big clubs in the region, global recognision to cash in on (to a point), and Ashley might be delusional enough to think ONeill is the man to get them there and be willing to hand over control and funds to do that. Maybe its nervousness about what Huyton would do with a lot of money that was behind this, with a more seasoned name there are more reassurances.

Whether ONeill is a good enough manager to do that is still open to question. He's undoubtedly pretty good, but maybe not as good as he thinks he is given the track record;)

If I was a Newcastle fan then of the British based managers "available" O'Neill would probably be my first choice.

I still can't see him being lured there. He had better, younger players at Villa and walked away.

I don't think Newcastle has much global appeal- hasn't Mike Ashley been trying to sell it for several years now???

By the way Liverpool are 2-0 up against Villa. I think Liverpool would be foolish to sack Hodgson. Again a good manager who has had no funds and inherited an ageing team.

Sacking the only manager around who is (was) willing to try his hand without a budget or complaints about not having a budget is ludicrous.

Ah well. it was quite nice in the Championship.

I doubt anyone with top-flight credentials wants to manage anything other than a top-flight club, which Newcastle are nowhere near at the moment. Newcastle probably need to settle for a manager who has solid mid-table Premier League ambitions to match the owner's, or one the the top five Coca-Cola Premier managers.Championship managers.

If Huyton was acked due to limited Premiership experience, surely Ashley knew that when he hired him. How does one get Premiership experience without managing a Premiership team?

How about Steve McClaren? He's done pretty well since leaving England. I suspect the likes of Jol and O'Neill will be waiting for the Liverpool job to become available.

Strange is not the word. He has two years of Premiership experience, during which he managed Wet Sham's worst run of results in 70 years and Charlton's relegation.

It's not exactly inspiring.

Judging by the comments on the Guardian blogs the players might want to keep an eye on their wives. That's if they're not playing away themselves.

Oh no. He's not stupid. Apparently he thinks Newcastle is a "massive club, one of the top five".

Fat chance of that with Ashley in charge.
