Yes, he picked the teams, but he (hopefully picked those who did the best in training and those players did not do the business when it mattered. I'll admit I know very little about managing a football team, but I'd have lost patience with most of them long before now and would have fielded the reserve team for one match, just to show the regulars that they aren't beyond dropping. |
Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
Apparently, Tottenham Hotspurs have finished at least fourth in the Premier League. They have broken the so-called sky four, with Liverpool and Aston Villa not making the grade. I'd like to speak for all of the BritishExpats.com community and congratulate them on a wonderful season. Well done, Tottenham Hotspurs. Your success is our success.

Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
Hats off to Harry, I dont think too many people would have predicted that at the start of the season, but they have been very good. A personal triumph for Gomes the goaly too after the beating he took at the start of his premiership career, and really satisfying to see so many English players in a successful team too.

Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
Well done Spurs! Well played, and with lots of UK players and home grown talent and a "native" boss!!
It was good to see him get the ice bucket treatment! He seemed to take it on good humour. |

http://i534.photobucket.com/albums/e...cs/geordie.jpg Edit: In the interests of balance, the average crowd figures I was quoting are for home league games only. Liverpool & Chelsea might come out higher if European games were included. There don't seem to have many of those at St. James' last season. |

Come on you Spurs!!!!
Super chuffed- was wearing my Spurs shirt up the Statue of Liberty today. No one in NYC recognizes the significance of the Mighty Yids!!! Oh well...... |

Provisional squad announcement
No Gary neville thank goodness. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2...uad?CMP=AFCYAH |
Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
I don't know about that - Neville's played some good games recently, and rendered Robinho invisible during the Champions League matches. He's been far more valuable to United recently than Carrick - who seems a bit of a liability.

No Gary neville thank goodness. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2...uad?CMP=AFCYAH Capello's got Carragher out of retirement even though carra rarely ever got a game for England before now despite being one of the best English defenders, who could play in any one of the back four positions. There's no guarantee that Barry will be fit again in time either, and James is such a great goalkeeper that his team got relegated this season (not completely his fault though). If I were England's World Cup opposition, I only see five players in that squad who'd I consider worth worrying about, and most of those are defenders. |

Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
Goalkeepers Joe Hart, David James, Robert Green
Defenders Leighton Baines, Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Michael Dawson, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock Midfielders Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Tom Huddlestone, Adam Johnson, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Scott Parker, Theo Walcott, Shaun Wright-Phillips Forwards Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney Which seven would you kick out? SWP, Upson, Warnock, Barry, Heskey, Huddlestone & Walcott for me. |

I don't think Bent will get near a game at all with Defoe and Rooney both doing what he does better and Crouch and Heskey being used as target men. |

after that, who knows. you only need to win 1 game from there to be in the semis, so its definitely possible as for the seven, i'd lose warnock, upson, king, walcott, SWP, johnson and milner. |
Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
The final 23 doesn't have to include everyone from the 30.

I don't think Bent will get near a game at all with Defoe and Rooney both doing what he does better and Crouch and Heskey being used as target men. The 30-man squad seems to have the usual problem of too many right-sided midfielders, and not enough left-sided ones. Ashley Young would have made a difference. |

If Owen H...had played in the last month or so, he would have likely have been in the 30 or 23. |
Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
I would have added Jenas and Danny Rose.

Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread
Jags might get back in now (if Terry is indeed crocked) or even Bridge? ;)

 I suppose it was too much to hope that Pompey could leap headlong out of the top flight with a final giant-killing flourish in the Cup. Congrats to Chelsea - they thoroughly outplayed a team that was at the end of its physical and emotional tether.
Oh well - here's hoping they follow the Toon's example and bounce back up after next season in the Championship. Avram Grant's suddenly being very noncommital about whether he'll stay in charge - can't say I blame him, he has no real idea who he'll be working for or whether he'll have enough cash to pay what's left of his players. |
